Fallon upsets Reed, splits 3A West games

The Greenwave boys basketball team upset one of the top 4A teams last week before splitting a pair of 3A West games.

Fallon came from behind in the second half to defeat Reed, 67-63, on Tuesday at the Elmo Dericco Gym before falling at Hug, 69-25, on Friday and rebounding with a 73-40 win over Sparks on Saturday in Fallon.

Fallon (6-3) hosts South Tahoe at 4:30 p.m. on Friday to conclude its crossover schedule before traveling to California next week for a four-day tournament. The Greenwave open the 3A East season on Jan. 5 at home against Elko.

Senior Brady Alves had a monster game against Reed, scoring 29 points, including 6-of-9 from long range, while junior Braden Sorensen scored 16 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and junior Trevor Hyde added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds and three steals.

Fallon shot 46 percent from the floor but protected the ball better, committing only four turnovers to Reed’s 12. The Raiders outrebounded the Greenwave by eight.

In Friday’s setback in Reno, Fallon struggled against the Hawks, shooting only 16 percent from the field, including 2-of-28 from 3-point land. Fallon also committed 18 turnovers.

Sorensen led the team with five points, while freshman Calin Anderson, Hyde and Alves each had four. Senior Baylor Sandberg pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds, while senior Luke Glinka had five rebounds and senior Carter Paul added four.

Fallon got back into the win column with a 33-point victory on Saturday against Sparks.

Anderson led the team in scoring with 15 points, including three 3-pointers, on 75-percent shooting and Glinka added 13 as Fallon shot 44 percent from the field and hit 10 3-pointers. Alves and Hyde each scored eight points, and Sandberg and Sorensen each added seven. Glinka and Sandberg tied for the team-lead in rebounds with nine, Anderson had five and Kylan Sorensen and Peek each had four. Anderson also had a team-high four assists and four steals while Hyde led the team in steals with five.
