You can take a good long look at either the defense or the offense from Douglas High’s opening round win over Reed Wednesday night as both were equally impressive.
A 55-15 win in the quarterfinals sets up No. 3 Douglas girls hoops with a matchup at No. 2 Bishop Manogue Friday at 6:30 p.m.
The Tigers were able to beat the Miners in their last meeting in Reno, 50-45.
A win Friday night would qualify Douglas for its second straight state tournament appearance.
Defensive tenacity
Douglas limited the Raiders to five points in the opening quarter, taking an 18-5 advantage.
The Tigers called a timeout with 4:15 left in the second quarter while leading 22-9.
The timeout may not have felt overly significant at the time, but Douglas’ defense would go approximately the next two quarters of game time without allowing a point.
By the time the Raiders scored again with 4:40 left in the fourth quarter, it was 51-9.
“Mainly, if the ball was in the air our feet were in the air,” said Aleeah Weaver. “Their main attack was their three’s. … We were just trying to fly around.”
Weaver and the Tigers combined for 14 steals in the win, including eight from different Douglas players on the floor.
Sky Rasmussen led the team with three swipes while also posting eight points and four rebounds.
Douglas pulled down 34 rebounds as a unit, including nine offensive boards, but more impressively got those rebounds from 10 different players.
Addy Doerr had a pair of blocks while Logan Karwoski had a stuffed shot herself in the first half.
Offensive output
It was Weaver and Karwoski who led the charge on the offensive end with 10 and nine points, respectively.
Along with Rasmussen, junior McKenzie Main tallied eight points of her own while senior Bre Williams scored six.
The 29-0 run spanning from the middle of the second quarter to the middle of the fourth was continually tacked onto from multiple avenues.
Douglas found times where it was easier to get inside and score points in the paint, but didn’t hesitate to shoot from outside either.
The Tigers finished the night 5-of-13 from beyond the arc and hit nearly 40 percent of their shots from inside the perimeter.
“It’s so much fun, knowing who comes off the bench is going to hold their own just like our starters do,” said Karwoski. “It’s fun to have a super deep bench like that.”
