Greenwave track opens '23 season in Fernley

The Greenwave track and field team opened the season with a small meet on Saturday in Fernley that saw the Fallon boys finish second.

Fallon scored 140 points while Fernley won both the boys and girls divisions with 198.5 and 181 points, respectively.

Fallon next competes in Dayton on Saturday.

The following are Fallon’s top-10 finishes from the Fernley meet.

Sprints

Junior Max McCoy won both the 100- and 200-meter runs in 12.32 and 26.18 seconds, while junior Ethan Tarner was eighth in the 100 in 12.80. Freshman Joe Dahl finished eighth in the 400 in 1:04.79.

Senior Madix Wehe led Fallon with a seventh-place finish in the 400 at 1:20.44.

Distance

Sophomores Edwin Ugalde, Uriel Romero-Montes and Tyler Huckaby finished in the top-five of the 800 with Ugalde taking second in 2:19.75. Romero-Montes finished third in 2:31.34 followed by Huckaby in fifth in 2:42.15.

Romero-Montes finished third in the 1600 in 5:37.45 followed by Huckaby in sixth in 5:56.19. Sophomore Dallin West finished third in the 3200 in 13:36.45 followed by freshman William McNeil in seventh in 15:41.24 and sophomore Henry Vergara in eighth in 15:59.56.

Hurdles

Senior William Brim-Klein won the 300 hurdles in 45.17 followed by senior Yahir Ugalde in fourth in 52.77. Freshmen Joseph Romero and Dax McCourtney finished in fifth and sixth in the 110 hurdles with times of 22.37 and 22.68.

Relays

The 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams won their race in 47.97, 4:04.55 and 9:30.59. The 4x200 team did not race.

The 4x100 team included Tarner, McCoy and sophomores Tyson Wilson and Braden Sorensen. The 4x400 team included Yahir and Edwin Ugalde, freshman Bransyn Wright and Brim-Klein, while the 4x800 included the same runners except Romero-Montes ran in place of Wright.

Throws

Junior Jacob Sorensen finished third in the discus with a throw of 103 feet, 1 inch, and seventh in the shot put at 31-5. Sophomore Alec Lecker finished 10th in the discus at 77-7.

Jumps

Tarner won the high jump at 5-8 followed by Wright in seventh at 5 feet. Wilson finished second in the long jump at 17-1 followed by junior Braden Hendrix in fourth at 16-11. Sophomore Jesus Sanchez and Dahl finished eighth and ninth with jumps of 16-0 and 15-10.

In the triple jump, Wright took second at 35-7 followed by Hendrix in fifth at 33-5 and junior Matthew Neumann in fifth at 30-2.

Junior Jessalyn Lewis, who medaled at last year’s state tournament, finished sixth in the triple jump at 25-5 and seventh in the long jump at 11-1.
