Douglas boys track and field tops Carson league meet

Douglas High boys track and field won on their rival’s surface over the weekend, taking first place at the Carson High league meet.

The Tigers ended Saturday with 56 team points, besting Spanish Springs (49) for the top spot.

A.J. Thurston set a personal record in the 100-meter dash for the second weekend in a row, winning the event in 11.34.

Connor Jackson and Joshua Nelson were third and fourth, respectively, in the 100.

Joshua Nelson turned around and won the 200-meter dash in 23.81 while Colton Hartline was third in 24.55.

Mateo Esquivel took fifth for the Tigers in 24.56.

Kevin O’Connell set a personal record in the 400, taking second place in 53.15.

Joel Nord and Dennis Jorgensen were fourth and fifth, respectively, for Douglas in the 800.

Junior Dylan Spear-Holub won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.60, setting a personal record.

Spear-Holub won the 300-meter hurdles in 44.74, also setting a PR.

The Douglas High boys 4x100 and 4x200 meter relay teams both won.

Kyle Koontz took fourth for the Tigers in the discus throw with a personal record of 107-9.

The Tigers were second, third and fourth in the pole vault with Carlo Barton taking second for Douglas with a nine-foot clearance.

Grant Gomes and Kai Ensign both cleared eight feet, six inches to take second and third.

Connor Jackson and Rock Gignac went 1-2 in the long jump. Jackson won with a leap of 19 feet and a half-inch while Gignac hit 18 feet, 7.25 inches.

Gignac was also third in the triple jump at 37 feet, 8.5 inches.

For the Tiger girls, Grace Strabala was third in the 100 meters in 13.49.

Strabala was also fifth in the 400 meters for the Tigers in 1:06.88.

Logan Axtell took fifth in the 800 meters, crossing the line in 3:00.73.

Sophie Marchut and Megan Strand continued their domination in the shot put and discus as Marchut took first in both.

In the shot put, Marchut recorded a throw of 31 feet, 1.75 inches before winning the discus with a mark of 93-7.

Strand threw the shot put 29 feet, 11.75 inches and the discus 90-9.

Elizabeth Gneiting and Sophie Jones were fourth and fifth in the high jump while Stella White was second in the pole vault, clearing 7 feet.

Gneiting was second in the long jump with a personal record of 15-5 while Logan Karwoski was fourth with a leap of 14-9.

Gneiting was also third in the triple jump, leaping 33-1.5.

Douglas baseball blanks Galena

The Tiger baseball team picked up its first league win of the season, beating Galena, 1-0, on Saturday at home.

Three Douglas pitchers combined for 10 strike outs.

Starter Keegan Freeman struck out four over four innings before Kaden McIver came on in relief.

McIver struck out five hitters in two innings. Thomas Young closed out the game, striking out one more batter.

Douglas allowed five hits total.

It was Young that knocked in the game’s only run in the bottom of the fifth inning, with an RBI single to left field.

Douglas is now 4-6 and 1-1 in Class 5A North league play.

UP NEXT: The Tigers remain at home this week with a make-up game against Reed on Wednesday at 3:45 p.m. before facing Reno at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday in Minden.

Douglas diving competes over weekend

The Douglas High dive team competed over the weekend with a pair of top finishes.

On the boys side, Austin Pitts took second with a score of 189.65, getting rewarded with the second best dive in four of his six dives.

Fellow Tiger Jesse Freeman was third with a score of 173.70, taking second in the other two of the six dives.

Cameron Alloway had 134.85 points and finished fifth while Dominic Santiago was sixth with a score of 99.8.

On the girls side, Hailey Peterson was third for the Tigers, posting a 146.55.

Peterson’s third dive was her best of the event.

Emily Phillips was fourth for Douglas with a total score of 143.20.
