The curtain goes up on A Midsummer Night’s Dream this Mother’s Day weekend. The show opens Friday, May 12th at 7 p.m., with additional shows May 13, 14, 19, 20 and 21. Performances take place in the Maize Theater at the Brewery Arts Center.

Produced by The Proscenium Players Inc, the performance is a clever and funny twist on Shakespeare’s original tale of four young star-crossed lovers, controlling parents, semi-successful spells cast by mischievous but well-intentioned fairies, and other natural and supernatural goings-on.

But here’s the twist, says PPI member Michon Chandler “We’ve moved the setting 5600 miles from Athens, Greece to Athens, Georgia and moved centuries forward from 1565 to current time.”

While set in contemporary times, the themes are the same: love, jealousy, and the power of imagination combined with mistaken identities, comedic mishaps, and unexpected twists and turns. “The play is still pretty much what Shakespeare had in mind, and as funny as ever. However, we do have some fun and take a few digs at Georgia Tech. It’s as funny as ever.”

Performances are May 12, 13, 19 and 20 at 7 p.m. and May 14 and 21 at 2 p.m.. Tickets are $25 for general admission and $20 for members, seniors and groups. They are available at www.carsontheater.com
