Virginia Truckee Railroad holiday trains start Nov. 24

The Virginia Truckee Railroad holiday steam trains depart from the original 1870 depot in Virginia City.

The Candy Cane Express will begin on the Friday after Thanksgiving and run on Saturday and Sunday afternoons through Dec. 24. The 45-minute round trip journey to Santa’s Christmas workshop will feature treats, a reading of the 1872 “T’was The Night Before Christmas,” Christmas carol sing-alongs, and a visit with the Jolly Old Elf and his friend “Lollypop.”

The Train O’ Lights featuring 100-year-old Steam Engine No. 29 and two decorated Pullman Coaches, along with the new Candy Cane Caboose will take route to Santa’s workshop.

Each guest will receive a bag of treats including a light stick and other surprises. Hot chocolate and hot cider will be served, and holiday music will complete the festive trip.

Rides start at 5 p.m., 6:30 p.m., and 8 p.m. Nov. 24 and run Friday and Saturday evenings through Dec. 23. All seats will be sold as reserved in groups of two and four, with lap babies traveling for free. Tickets and seating chart are available at www.virginiatruckee.com. Free parking is available. Reservations are recommended.
