Tommy Castro & The Painkillers are coming back to Northern Nevada, this time they’ll be performing inside the Nashville Social Club in Carson City. Also performing with them will be guest Deanna Bogart, an internationally-known artist who plays saxophone, piano and sings.

“She’s joined forces with us on this tour and it really adds to make a dynamic and really entertaining show,” Castro said.

Castro said he’s excited to get back to the capital, a place he hasn’t played since summer 2021.

“It’s been a while and every time I remember being there or being in the area like Reno, it’s always just been a great place for our kind of music,” Castro said. “People just kind of get it. So, I’m looking forward to coming to Carson City for sure.”

Castro is known for his award-winning blues music and performances. The music is original and based in different types of blues including traditional, rock and R&B soul music blended in with a little funk, he said. He brings along with him The Painkillers, with Randy McDonald on bass, Bowen Brown on the drum kit and Michael Emerson on keys.

“It’s a pretty big, fat sound,” Castro said.

Castro said they will bring up Bogart halfway through the show and they will play some of her songs as she plays piano with Castro & The Painkillers as the backing band. Then she will get back on saxophone and jam out with the band. Depending on how things go, Castro said he also might do a short acoustic set.

“it’s going to be a pretty entertaining show for people who haven’t seen us in a while,” he said.

Castro said Bogart is well loved in the blues community and having her will be special.

“If they (fans) know we are coming and they know Deanna is going to be with us, that will be the thing that will get them off the couch,” Castro said. “She has a lot of fans, and she doesn’t get out too often, so people are really excited to find she is coming.”

Since Castro’s last visit to Carson City, he released his album “A Bluesman Came to Town.” It’s a rock opera that tells a story from the first song to the last. The Blues Foundation awarded the album as best album of the year. He said since he hasn’t had the chance to play it in Reno or Carson, it will be plenty of fresh material for his fans.

“It’s one of my better albums, and arguably some say my best,” he said.

Tommy Castro & The Painkillers have been on an extensive North American tour. He said he hasn’t been home more than 10 days in a row since it all started. Carson City was going to be the last stop before a break, but they added another date closer to San Francisco, which was easy for the band since that’s where they call home.

Then they’ll be looking forward to the legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise coming up in a couple weeks at the Mexican Riviera.

“it’s the best gig of the year,” Castro said. “We always have loads of fun.”

He said just about everybody in the blues makes it to that event with many legends performing.

“It’s like a vacation and a family reunion getting with friends you don’t see all the time,” he said. “It’s a fun gig.”

The band will travel to Europe for all of November and things will slow down in December. Then Castro said they will work on a couple of projects to be recorded with a couple of concept albums. They just need time to figure it out and get in the studio, he said.
