Faith & Insight: Heavenly heartburn

Among the Gospel writers, only Luke tells the story of Cleopas and his friend as they walked the seven-mile road from Jerusalem to their home in Emmaus.

They had been with fellow believers who had been talking about the empty tomb of Jesus some of them had seen that very morning. Suddenly Jesus began walking with them!

Unrecognized, he explained from scripture all the things that the Messiah was to suffer before entering glory. As they reached home, they began eating with Jesus, and as they recognized him, he disappeared.

They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the scriptures?” (Luke 24:32).

Well, on this very day, we’re walking a road too. Let’s make sure that Jesus is walking that road with us. As we journey with him, there comes a heavenly warmth from his presence. He has promised never to leave or forsake us.

"Walk on, walk on – with hope in your heart, and you'll never walk alone. You'll never walk alone" – Rodgers and Hammerstein, in Carousel, 1945.
