Dayton football bests White Pine

Dayton High football is 4-1 for the first time since 2014 after a 36-6 win over White Pine on Saturday at home.

The Dust Devils didn’t play the cleanest game Saturday, but there were plenty of sparks and areas to continue building on.

Quarterback Dylan Spangler tossed a pair of touchdowns, including the Dust Devils’ first score of the game.

Late in the opening quarter, Spangler found Aidan Kranjcec for a 20-yard touchdown, giving the maroon and white a 7-0 edge.

Running back Tristan Johnston picked up the final nine yards on two carries for Dayton’s second touchdown midway through the second quarter.

Spangler connected with Justin Neils for a 15-yard touchdown reception with 3:07 left in the first half to move the Dust Devils in front 22-0 after they converted a 2-point try.

White Pine responded with a kickoff return for a score – the only points for the Bobcats.

In the second half, Spangler tossed his third touchdown to Lyrik Council, who made a juggling catch.

“The kids wanted to fight. This is their program. This is their program,” said Dayton coach Terrence Spann. “Wins aren’t just going to be given in a difficult (Class) 2A. They put in the work this offseason and that has translated to these wins.”

It is the Dust Devils first season in Class 2A after asking for a drop from Class 3A for several years.

Dayton is independent this season so it won’t be eligible for the postseason, but Spann firmly believes 2A is the right classification for the program.

“This is where we are supposed to be. … Dayton looks like Lovelock, Dayton looks like Ely. Dayton doesn’t look like Fernley or Elko,” said Spann. “We are super thankful to the 2A for letting us play this independent schedule.”

The Dust Devils have 26 players on the roster this season.

Dayton has some tough tests upcoming in taking on Hamilton (2-2) in Hamilton City, Calif., this Friday and Pershing County (1-3) the first Friday in October.

“We’ve never beat them (Pershing) since I’ve been a head coach here,” Spann added.

Carson girls XC wins Reed Invite, boys third

Carson High girls cross country continues to dominate its competition with steady finishes from every runner each week.

Leading the way at the Reed Invitational was sophomore Hannah Budd, who took fourth in 20:32.

Vea Miner and Anna Shane were also inside of the top 10 with times of 20:49 and 22:31, respectively.

Four Senator harriers finished in a row as Madison Hager took 11^th, Jinnie Ponczoch was 12^th, Brianna Rodriguez-Nunez was 13^th and Ella Dooley took 14^th.

Junior Eleanor Romeo finished 20^th with a time of 23:05.

Carson won the team event with 40 points while North Tahoe finished second with 75.

The Senator boys took third as a team Saturday with 96 team points, finishing behind Spanish Springs (34) and Galena (44).

Sawyer Macy was the first Carson runner to finish, taking sixth in 17:31.

Sean Thornton and Alex Miner both finished in 18:52 with the slight edge going to Thornton who was 18^th overall.

Mark Walther, Quinn Kuchnicki and Nate Freed were 34^th, 35^th and 36^th.

Falcons run at Reed Invite

Sierra Lutheran High’s runners set personal records, along with two seasonal records at the Reed Invite.

"I did not expect this much of an improvement, but this is what my athletes wanted. They wanted to be better and faster, and they were,” said coach Robin Williams.

Two athletes ran in the junior varsity race – Cameron Bourne in 28:00 and Carter Redford, who finished in 28:15.

In the varsity race, Aidan Concannon set a personal record in 19:12; Noah Sever and Chandler Ricks did the same in 19:58 and 21:07, respectively. Eli Woelfel finished in 22:17, Josiah Maschke crossed the line 22:29 and Daniel Poole clocked a 24:49.

The Falcons were seventh as a team with only 5A and 3A schools ahead of them.

Falcon volleyball bests Oasis

The Sierra Lutheran High volleyball team beat Oasis Academy on Saturday by a final of 3-1.

Oasis took the first set, 25-22, before the Falcons responded by winning the final three – 25-18, 25-16, 25-19.

Chloe Friend led Sierra Lutheran with 14 kills while Kayla Carpenter posted an additional six.

Carpenter and Bella Ruiz each served a trio of aces while Remi Cummings led the Falcons in digs with 10.

UP NEXT: Sierra Lutheran (3-7, 3-6 in Class 2A league play) will be on the road Friday at Yerington (12-8, 7-2).

Mustang boys soccer shuts out Carson

Carson High boys soccer fell to Damonte Ranch on Saturday at home, 3-0.

UP NEXT: Carson (6-4-1, 5-3-1) takes on Bishop Manogue (4-3-1, 3-3) Wednesday on the road.

Carson High girls soccer falls to Damonte Ranch

The Senator girls soccer team hung with Damonte Ranch in the first half Saturday before ultimately falling, 3-1.

Carson’s lone goal came from Monse Iza while Ashley Waiksnoris was credited with the assist.

UP NEXT: Carson (2-4-1, 0-2 in Class 4A) will be back in action Thursday at Bishop Manogue (6-4-1, 1-0).

Carson volleyball goes 4-1 over weekend

Carson High School volleyball traveled to Fair Oaks, California for a weekend tournament where the Senators only dropped one contest.

In fact, through Carson’s four wins, the Senators only lost one set.

In their final match against Vista del Lago, Carson fell 2-1 after winning the opening set.

UP NEXT: Carson (17-4, 5-3 in Class 5A North league play) will jump back into league play against McQueen (12-5, 4-4) Thursday night in Carson.

Dayton volleyball takes out Fernley

It took four sets, but the Dust Devil volleyball team defeated Fernley, 3-1, Friday night.

Dayton won the first two sets – 25-19, 25-12 – before dropping the third, 25-23.

In the fourth and final set, the Dust Devils escaped with a 27-25 win.
