CAPS: 38 years and moving forward

Dear reader, CAPS is having an anniversary! Opening 38 years ago in 1986, CAPS, our no-kill shelter has been a wonderful addition to the community. The original founders were a group known as the Dirty Dozen, and it was through their dedication and perseverance CAPS became a reality.

For those of you unaware of the history, CAPS first opened at the Old Post Office but rapidly expanded to Crook Road. It was a difficult move and there were few resources. Thankfully, our local businesses supplied materials, expertise, volunteers, and NAS Fallon’s Sea Bee’s provided labor.

CAPS expanded rapidly and quickly outgrew the Crook Road shelter. It was imperative that the shelter move to a more spacious site. Churchill County leased land on Pasture Road and obtained permits for operation. Again, our community rallied and volunteered with labor and materials.

Last year Churchill County informed us that we would eventually be moving to a new building. At this time, we have no update on when this will happen. That said, we promise to keep you informed as we get more information.

Over the years, we have called upon the community to help us with the incredible services we provide, and you have never disappointed us. We will continue to count on you, because we need your support! Veterinarian services are costly, and we need funds. Our goal is to offer healthy animals that have been vaccinated, spayed/neutered, and microchipped.

Puppy and kitty season is around the corner. It is a time each year when we get overwhelmed with discarded animals who are pregnant or have a litters of puppies or kitties. We would appreciate any donation you could provide.

I would like to commend Norma Klenakis, one of the original Dirty Dozen, who saw a need to address the issue of abandoned animals in Churchill County. To quote her, “For our organization to exist, we have to get cooperation.” Fallon is the small town with a big heart!

ATTENTION

• CAPS will be at the Home and Garden Show on Saturday, April 13 and Sunday, April 14 at the Fallon Convention Center.

• McHoppers Brew on Hwy 395 in Fernley on Saturday, April 13 from noon to 6 p.m.   

• CAPS Spring garage sale is Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27. We need items! Please bring your items to Oasis Church on Thursday, April 25. Call for details. 775-423-7500.

LOOKING FOR A HOME

• Puppies! We have four 12-week-old incredibly beautiful fluffy white Husky puppies. There are three females, one male, and one seven-month-old white and black puppy. Call for details. 775-423-7500. Cat lovers, we have cats galore and they are fabulous. Come out and meet them.

IN NEED OF

• Board Members! We need energetic, enthusiastic, community-minded folks our board. We meet once a month the second Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Call 775-423-7500 for details.

• Bleach, laundry detergent pods, toilet paper, and paper towels.

• Aluminum cans. We will pick up your cans; give us a call at 775-423-7500. You can also drop them off at CAPS.

CAPS is open to the public on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

We suggest appointments for adoptions and food pantry.
