Oasis roundup: Bighorns keep winning on the diamond

The Bighorns softball and baseball teams extended their winning streaks last week just in time for two pivotal series against Yerington and Pershing County.

The Oasis Academy softball team (12-0, 8-0 2A North) stayed perfect on the season after 19-4 and 17-0 wins over Silver Stage on Friday in Fallon, while the baseball team (10-1, 2A North) extended its winning streak to 10 after sweeping Silver Stage, 8-2 and 14-3, on Friday in Fallon.

Both teams traveled to Yerington on Tuesday and host the Lions for a doubleheader on Saturday before hosting Pershing County on Monday. Pershing County is undefeated as well in the softball division while Yerington sits in third. In baseball, Yerington is 2.5 games behind Oasis Academy for second. Pershing County is winless in league.

In the softball team’s 19-4 three-inning win over the Nighthawks, junior Taylynn Maynez finished with three singles and an RBI, while junior Kristin Detomasi singled and tripled in four runs. Juniors Lorena Rios and Kaylin Guthrie each drove in three runs while freshman Phynex Hunt homered and drove in three. Sophomore Dahlila Creer and freshman Emma Lewis each had an RBI.

The scoring didn’t stop in the second game, which also ended after three innings.

Lewis, Detomasi and Maynez each drove in two runs, and freshman Haley Bowman and Hunt each had an RBI.

The Bighorns baseball team broke open a close game with four runs in the fifth inning of its 8-2 win.

Sophomore Matthew Bird homered, singled and drove in three to lead the Bighorns, and sophomore Kayden White singled and drove in one.

Junior Zachary Budner picked up the win after pitching 4.2 innings and striking out seven.

The second game was a different story as Oasis Academy scored 10 in the first inning.

Bird and Budner each doubled and drove in two, and sophomores Ryder McNabb and Trevor Barrenchea each had an RBI.

Barrenchea, who also doubled, struck out seven in three innings for the win, and junior Fenn Mackedon closed the door with five strikeouts in two innings.
