Bighorns take big honors on 2A all-league lists

Playing in its first eligible season, Oasis Academy coach Sean McNabb led the Bighorns baseball team to a third-place finish in the 2A North and a trip to the playoffs.

After guiding the team to an 18-6 record in league, McNabb was named the Coach of the Year as voted by the league coaches. Seven players, including sophomore Ryder McNabb and junior Zachary Budner were named to the all-league first team.

Both players led the team in batting with Budner posting a .488 batting average followed by McNabb at .437. McNabb led the team in RBIs with 30 and Budner belted two home runs. McNabb was also the team’s ace on the mound, posting a 1.35 earned-run average in 41.1 innings while Budner was third on the team in innings pitched with 32.1 to go with his 4.98 ERA.

Junior Fenn Mackedon and sophomore Matthew Bird were named to the second, and junior Josh Gusewelle and sophomores Trevor Barrenchea and Kayden White were honorable mention.

Mackedon finished the year with a .410 batting average and led the team in home runs with three. Bird batted .379 on the year and drove in 13 runs. Both also pitched with Bird striking out 29 in 38.1 innings for a 3.47 ERA. Mackedon struck out 34 in 24 innings for a 4.38 ERA.


SOFTBALL

The Oasis Academy softball team also had seven named to the 2A North team, including juniors Kirsten Detomasi and Taylynn Maynez being selected to the first team.

Detomasi and Maynez led the team at the plate with Detomasi batting a team-high .492 followed by Maynez at .475.

Detomasi was also the team’s ace in the pitching circle, striking out 169 in 111.1 innings for a 4.59 ERA. Maynez was second on the team with 20 strikeouts in 30 innings for a 4.43 ERA.

Senior Eneyde Rios and freshman Phynex Hunt were named to the second team. Hunt led the team in home runs (six) and RBIs (43) as she finished with a .443 batting average. Rios finished with a .403 batting average, including two home runs and 18 RBIs.

Sophomore Dahlila Creer, freshman Emma Lewis and junior Kaylin Guthrie were honorable mention.
