Douglas High School softball continued its Class 5A North league winning streak with a two-game sweep of Reed on Saturday in Reno.

The Tigers put together wins of 7-1 and 2-1 in the doubleheader.

In the 7-1 win, Annie Hill and Zora Simpson both hit home runs while Ava Delaney recorded a triple.

Lilyann Lee, Mercedes Covey, Peyton Simpson and Talia Tretton all doubled in the win with three of the four recording RBIs in the victory.

In the circle, Tretton fanned 10 Raider hitters while allowing four hits and a lone earned run.

In game two, Tretton again punched out 10 Reed batters while allowing three hits.

At the plate, Simpson was credited with both RBIs while going 2-for-3 with a two-run home run to right field in the top of the sixth inning.

The Tigers have won their last 26 league games with Douglas’ last league loss coming May 3, 2022.

UP NEXT: Douglas (18-4, 7-0 in Class 5A North league play) will host Reno (3-6, 3-3) twice this week, playing league games on both Tuesday and Thursday with 3:45 start times.


Tiger baseball back in the win column

After a tough stretch in league play, Douglas High School baseball got back in the win column with a 21-14 win over North Valleys Friday and a 9-2 win over Spanish Springs Saturday.

In Friday’s victory, the Tigers bats put together 12 hits as Jeffrey Peters, Owen Evans and Thomas Young all recorded home runs.

Peters and Evans both drove in a team-high four RBIs in the win.

Luke Main was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs while Jackson Ovard also recorded a pair of hits with two runs batted in.

Saturday, Douglas scored three runs in the first and two in the second to jump out to an early 5-0 lead.

Of the Tigers 13 hits, 11 came from the first four hitters in the lineup as Peters and Ovard both recorded three hits apiece.

Young put together two doubles and had three hits of his own in the win.

Keegan Freeman tossed all seven innings on the bump, striking out 10 hitters and allowing one earned run.

UP NEXT: Douglas (13-5, 4-4 in Class 5A league play) will be away this week playing at Carson (7-14, 0-8) Tuesday and at McQueen (10-10, 4-5) Thursday.


Tiger girls eighth, boys ninth at Northwest Invite

The Douglas girls got another standout result from sophomore Grace Strabala, who won the 100-meter dash in a personal record time of 12.77 seconds.

Strabala finished second in the 200 in 26.49 before taking third in the 400 in 1:00.88, which was also a personal record.

Lucy Nord was ninth in the 800 for Douglas in 2:36.65 and took fifth in the 1,500 in 5:14.71, setting a personal record.

Freshman Amy Van Wagenen was sixth in the 3,000 meter run in 11:55.95.

Sophomore Autumn Petite to seventh in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.72.

The Tiger girls 4x800 relay team of Ayla Nelson, Logan Axtell, Van Wagenen and Nord took fourth in 10:27.42.

Malena Van Wagenen and Naomi Mackenzie were fifth and seventh, respectively, in the high jump.

For the Tiger boys, Luke Davis tied for third in the 1,500 meters in a personal record time of 4:13.54.

Carlo Barton cleared 11 feet in the pole vault to finish in seventh place.

Zach Jackson and Joshua Nelson were second and third, respectively, in the long jump.

Jackson measured a leap of 20 feet, 5.5 inches to set a personal record.

Nelson also set a personal record with a leap of 20 feet, two inches.


Douglas swim and dive compete against Damonte, Spanish Springs

The Douglas boys squeaked out a 109-108 win over Damonte Ranch this past weekend thanks to the help of its diving team.

Allen Baker won the 1-meter competition with a score of 246.80 while Austin Pitts was second with a 225.15.

Matthew Yturbide won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:12.14 while Lucas Goss won the 100-yard freestyle in 59.26.

The Tiger boys also picked up a couple first place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard relay as well.

The grouping of Timothy Gleason, Scott Peck, Yturbide and Goss won the medley relay in 2:02.27 while Peck, Yturbide, Dominic Santiago and Terrance Santiago were first in the 400-yard relay in 4:29.14.

The Tiger boys fell to Spanish Springs 173-84.

Allen Baker once again took the top spot in the 1-meter dive with a score of 246.80.

On the girls side, Douglas beat Damonte Ranch, 171-103.

Douglas had the first place finisher in every event except one against the Mustangs.

Kiera Duffy won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:22.33 while Gracie Goss touched the wall first in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:31.15.

Duffy also won the 100-yard fly.

Hadley Peck won the 50-yard freestyle in 31.74 and 100-yard breaststroke while Kiley Wagstaff was the first-place finisher in the 1-meter dive with a 144.90.

Caitlin Taylor took the top spot in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:01.86 while Carli Stevenson won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:19.77.

Douglas went on to lose to Spanish Springs, 181-124, Saturday.

Taylor once again took the top spot in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:01.86.

The foursome of Duffy, Taylor, Goss and Cammie Jahreis won the 200-yard relay in 1:50.56.
