Douglas' defense silences Reed

It was a wire-to-wire win for Douglas High School girls basketball Friday night, downing Reed 56-21.

The Tigers leading the entire 32 minutes wasn’t really the most impressive part.

It was Douglas’ defense that battened down the hatches and held the Raiders to just 10 points over the final three quarters of play.

Through the first quarter, Douglas led 21-11 and had assists on five of their first seven baskets from the floor.

The Tigers had doubled their lead before the half was over, walking into the locker room with a 38-17 edge at the intermission.

It wouldn’t get any closer as the Tigers limited Reed to four points over the course of the second half, blanking the Raiders entirely in the fourth quarter.

“We’re just really good just flying out,” said Aleeah Weaver, who had eight points. “We just want it. We’re scrappy and we will be on the floor.”

Weaver finished the night with eight points, posting four in the first and third quarters.

Douglas used a full court press through almost the entirety of the second and third quarters, forcing the Raiders to try and attack the entire length of the floor.

The Tigers frequently forced turnovers, which led to transition chances on the offensive end.

“There’s more of us on the floor than standing up most times,” laughed Weaver.

Greenfield scoring in bunches

For at least the third game in a row, Ashlyn Greenfield led the Tigers in scoring on the offensive end.

The junior guard got going in the first quarter when Weaver found her open in the corner.

Greenfield buried the triple without hesitation to give Douglas an 11-7 lead.

After snagging a steal and getting to the line for one, Greenfield added another triple a few moments later.

The junior’s second 3-pointer came from an assist from senior guard McKenzie Main.

Greenfield started the second quarter with her third 3-pointer of the contest and hit another in the third quarter en route to a 16-point performance.

Hailee Koontz and Giana Zinke both scored seven points apiece in the victory.

League play

Douglas has earned a bit of breathing room for the second seed in Class 4A North league play.

The Tigers are 9-1 after Friday night’s win in league action and sit one game behind Bishop Manogue (10-0) while Spanish Springs is in third at 7-3.

This coming Thursday, the Tigers will have another shot at the Miners in Reno.

“Defensively, I think we can really shut them down. They can shoot and they can drive, but I know we can shut down both of those,” Weaver said.

UP NEXT: Douglas will host Reno (9-9, 4-6) Tuesday before running into the Miners Thursday evening.
