Bighorns baseball: Oasis sweeps Sierra Lutheran

The Oasis Academy baseball team picked up another league series win, sweeping Sierra Lutheran last week.

The Bighorns defeated the Falcons, 12-4, on March 12 in Fallon before sweeping a doubleheader, 14-3 and 9-7, on Saturday in Carson City.

Oasis Academy travels to Battle Mountain this weekend for a three-game series with the Longhorns.

In the first game against the Falcons, Oasis put up seven runs in the fourth inning to break the game open after leading 3-2.

Sophomore Ryder McNabb and junior Fenn Mackedon each drove in two runs, while sophomore Matthew Bird and junior Zachary Budner each drove in one. Budner doubled and tripled.

Four Bighorns pitched with McNabb striking out six in two innings to get the win. Mackedon, Bird and sophomore Kayden White also took the mound.

In Saturday’s first game in Carson City, Oasis Academy broke the game open in the final inning, scoring 10 runs after leading 4-2.

Five players drove in two runs, including sophomore Trevor Barrenchea, junior Josh Gusewelle, Mackedon, Bird and McNabb. Gusewelle recorded three singles, and Bird and Budner each had two hits. McNabb, Barrenchea, Budner and freshman Michael Casey each doubled.

Budner and Mackedon combined to strike out 14 Falcons as Mackedon picked up the win with a seven-strikeout performance in four scoreless innings.

In the nightcap, the Bighorns needed late-game heroics to pull out the sweep, scoring four runs in the sixth inning after being down 7-5.

Bird led the team at the plate with a double, two singles and an RBI, and McNabb and Barrenchea each had two hits. Mackedon had two RBIs, and McNabb, Gusewelle and sophomore James Thibodaux each drove in one.

McNabb picked up the win, striking out five while allowing no runs in three innings, after Bird started and allowed three earned runs in four innings while striking out two.
