The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is reminding the public to stay vigilant against scam telephone calls. In scam calls, the original callers are claiming to be a family member who was involved in an accident. They pretend to be injured, in legal trouble, and unable to speak appropriately. They give a phone number for the victims to call, and once the victim calls, victims are asked for money to pay for legal fees.
Recently, Carson City residents have been contacted by scammers pretending to be the Carson City Sheriff’s Office employees. These scammers will tell the potential victims they have warrants for their arrest or they have missed jury duty, according to a press release from the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.
In 2022 and 2023, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office investigated many cases of people selling counterfeit jewelry.
Officials say the callers are asking for personal information.
One victim gave the driller a $6,000 deposit and has since been unable to contact the driller.
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office has received numerous calls from citizens regarding a reoccurring telephone scam.
Online purchase scams now account for more than a third of all scam reports filed with the Better Business Bureau, and four out of five consumers who report such scams lose money, making it the No. 1 riskiest scam type.
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office has received calls regarding another phone scam.
