Obituary: Earl Mayes

A memorial service for Earl Mayes, 97, a Reno resident, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Walton's Funeral Home, Reno, 875 W. Second St.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at Walton's.

Mr. Mayes died Oct. 3, 1999, at his residence. He was born June 17, 1902, in Wichita Falls, Texas, to John Andrew and Carrie Calvert Mayes.

He graduated from Bishop High School in 1920. Shortly after his graduation, he moved to Yerington. In 1950, he moved to Reno, where he lived until his death.

Mr. Mayes was involved in transportation including owning his own truck line, Mayes Fast Freight, until he went to work for the State of Nevada in 1955 as the Director of Surplus Properties, a position he held until he retired in 1970.

He was president of Motor Transportation Association from 1940-43, a member of the Yerington Volunteer Fire Department for 17 years, a charter member and first president of the Yerington Rotary Club, a charter member and first president of the Yerington 20/30 Club, past president and lifetime member of the State of Nevada Employees Association, a charter member of the Retired Public Employees of the State of Nevada and a Lyon County Assemblyman from 1941-42.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Paul and sisters, Edith Austin and Mary Ellen Mayes.

Among his survivors are his wife, Mabel; sons, James D., of Reno, John P., of Harrisonville, Mo., and Michael P., of Henderson; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Valley View Cemetery in Yerington.
