Perez, Harvey shine at Loretta Lynn's

Carson City's Robert Perez and Aron Harvey had outstanding finishes at the American Motorcycle Association/Air Nautiques Amateur National Motocross Championships held at Loretta Lynn's Ranch in Tennessee this past weekend.

Perez took sixth in the Motocross C Class in the nationals, the largest amateur motocross race in the world, at Loretta Lynn's. Perez took 12th, fifth, and 12th in his three motos to take sixth overall against 42 of the nation's best racers.

The third moto for Perez cost him a top three finish when his racing bib became tangled in another racer's handlebars and he was jerked off his motorcycle, which dropped him to 37th on the first lap. Perez was able to come back to take 12th in the moto.

Among the sponsors for Perez were Michaels Cycle Works, Dubach Racing Development, Answer Racing, Twin Air, Dunlop Tires and Enzo Suspension. Perez races a Yamaha YZ450F and a Yamaha YZ250F. His bikes have had little in repair costs in the three years he has been riding motorcycles, which has helped tremendously. While many other racers have had to repair or replace blown motors, Perez has avoided that expense with good bikes and a good maintenance program.

Perez will continue to race the national circuit in 2008 and will move up to the intermediate class immediately, rather than wait until later in the year as many racers do. Perez will continue to train in Northern Nevada until winter sets in, then he will train in Southern California. Perez has an ultimate goal to turn pro in the sport.

Perez has only been racing for two years and riding motorcycles for three years, making his achievement to just qualify for Loretta Lynn's, let alone finish sixth, that much more impressive. Every racer on the starting gate that competed against Perez had either been riding his whole life or racing since elementary school.

Racing as a professional, Harvey, a 2005 Carson High graduate, took fifth in the motocross A class and eighth in the MX Lites A class.

Carson City's Adam Conway also raced at Loretta Lynn's, taking 33rd overall in the schoolboy class for ages 14-16.

Carson High football begins Thursday

Carson High's football program will begin practice on Aug. 9. Varsity and junior varsity players will meet at 7 a.m. at the CHS junior varsity baseball field and freshmen will meet at 8 a.m. in the weightroom.

Players should have their athletic packets completed at the CHS athletic office no later than early this morning.

CHS athletes need to be ready to go

All Carson High student-athletes competing in fall sports are required to have clearance from the Athletic Office which includes filling out and signing all forms in the athletic packet.

Students must be cleared to participate in fall sports. Student body cards, which cost $25, are also required for athletes and anyone in an extracurricular activity.

Athletes also need to have a mandatory yearly concussion test, which costs $5. All fees have to be paid to the CHS Student Finance Office in order to participate.

Athletic packets are now available at the CHS athletic offic. The office is open from 7-10:30 a.m. and from 11:30-2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Western Nevada to hold soccer clinic

Boys and girls of all skill levels and ages can participate in a free youth soccer clinic presented by the Western Nevada College women's soccer team on Sunday, Aug. 19 at Edmonds Park.

Participants will have the chance to learn new soccer skills, meet the members of the 2007 Wildcats soccer team, and most important, have fun. WNCC coach Hillary Arthur, the 2006 Region XVIII Coach of the Year, and her players will go over passing, receiving and offensive/defensive tactics.

Boys and girls from ages 5 to 9 will take the field from 9-10:30 a.m., ages 10-14 from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., and ages 15-17 from 1-2:30 p.m. There is no pre-registration required; participants just need to arrive a bit early for each clinic. Players should also bring plenty of sun block and water, and have cleats and shin guards.

Western Nevada's fall 2007 season kicks off with a road contest on Saturday, Aug. 25, against American River Community College in Sacramento at 2 p.m. The Wildcats first home game is Friday, Sept. 14, against Lassen Community College at 4 p.m. at Edmonds Park. Rage 13 baseball team is formed

A new 13 and under traveling baseball team, the Carson City Rage, has been formed. The team is managed by Dave Bacon and coached by Doug Elliott, John Nolan, and Dana Moscott. The Team is sponsored by several local businesses: Larry Krupp, owner of BIG O Tire, Dr. Anthony Zimmerman of Rabbit Brush Health Care, and Rupert's Auto Body.

The team played this past weekend at the Big League Field of Dreams event in Redding, Calif.

Team members are: Danny Bacon, Kyle Brown, Nevin Elliott, Logan Krupp, Austin Kiesow, Jacob McClelland, Jay Milligan, James Moscott, Matt Nolan, Dion Olsen, and Ronnie Orzalli.

Virginia City High needs VB coaches

Adult volleyball signups being held

Registration for the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department's adult volleyball fall season is now on going.

Registration will be held from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Carson City Community Center office through August 24. Cost is $170 per team and the fee must be paid at registration.

Coed II, III and IV will play Mondays and/or Wednesdays and women's II, III and IV will play Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. Practice will begin August 20 and league play will begin September 3. For more information, call Joel Dunn, 887-2290, extension 104.

Youth volleyball signups being held

Registration for the Carson City Parks and Recreation youth volleyball league is now on going.

Signups are being held from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Carson City Community Center office through August 24. The league is open to boys and girls in fifth through eighth grades.

Cost is $50 for one child and $90 for two children in the same family. Instruction and matches will begin on September 3.

Indoor futsal league will be offered

Registration for the Carson City Parks and Recreation women's indoor futsal league has been set.

Signups will be held Monday through Friday, August 13-24 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center office.

League play will be held on Friday and Saturday nights at the Carson City Recreation Gym. Five-person teams will play two 20-minute halves.

There can be up to 12 players per team with unlimited substitutions. Futsal Federation rules will be used. Players must be at least 16 by September 1.

The cost is $300 per team for 12 games. The fee must be paid at registration and checks should be made payable to Carson City.
