Prep roundup: Carson softball sweeps

The Carson High softball team picked up a much needed sweep against South Tahoe, winning the opener 16-0 and the nightcap 13-3 on Saturday at CHS.

Daria Leid was the winning pitcher in the nightcap, pitching a complete game as she struck out four and walked one while giving up two earned runs on four hits over five innings.

Christa Casci had a hit and two runs, Abby Rankl had two hits, including a double, and two RBI and three runs, Keller had three hits, two runs and an RBi, Cassie Vondrak had one hit and one RBI, K.C. Withrow went 2-for-2 with an RBI, Hannah Shaw was 2-for-2 with two RBI and Krista Mattice added a hit.

In the nightcap, Keller pitched a complete game two-hit shutout, striking out eight and walking none over five innings.

Casci was 2-for-4 with four RBI, Keller, Mattice and Leid all had two hits and two RBI, Vondrak was 2-for-4, Belen Munoz was 2-for-2 with an RBI, Shaw was 1-for-3 with three RBI and McEwan went 1-for-2.

Carson improved to 4-5 in the Sierra League heading into a key three-game series against Damonte Ranch which begins on Thursday at Damonte.

"The girls played excellent ball and the pitchers did a fantastic job," Carson coach Scott Vickrey said. "They were mixing their pitches and hitting their spots and we were just tearing the cover off the ball at the bat. I'm hoping we're breaking out more."

CHS SWIMMING

The Carson High boys and girls swim teams had many outstanding efforts during the High Desert League Aqua 5 meet on Saturday at Carson Aquatic Facility. In the meet swimmers competed in the 100-yard freestyle, the 100 breaststroke, the 100 backstroke, the 100 butterfly and the 50 free.

Matt Grunert was a triple winner for Carson's boys, taking the 100 free in 50.82 seconds, the 100 back in 57.87 and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:06.27. Carson went 1-2-3 in the 100 free as Kevin Dyer was second in 51.70 and Jacob Cornwell was third in 52.31.

Nick Schlager and Luke Gentner also took fifth and sixth in the 100 breaststroke. Grunert also took second in the 100 back in 57.87 while Cornwell was third, Kevin Dyer was fourth and Albert Reed was eighth. In addition, Dyer was second in the 100 fly (58.21).

In the girls 100 free, Galena's Cady Auble edged Carson's Julie Asire for the title as she won in 56.52 whil Asire was second in 57.06. Galena's Alex Brown beat Grunert in the 100 back, finishing in 57.39. Brown also beat Dyer in the 100 fly, finishg in in 57.75.

In the girls overall Pentathlon standings, Auble was second with a total time of 4:59.67. Galena's Lauren Vessie was fourth in 5:01.22 and Asire was fifth in 5:12.48.

In the boys, Brown edged Grunert for the overall title 4:20.09 to 4:20.91. Dyer was fourth in 4:34.27, Cornwell was sixth in 4:37, Schlager was seventh in 4:48.96 and Reed was eighth in 4:55.22.

CHS BASEBALL SWEEPS HUG

The Senators pulled off a sweep against Hug, winning 21-0 and 11-0 Saturday in Reno.

The sweep improved Carson's record to 13-8 overall and 5-4 in conference. In the three games, Carson outscored Hug 67-0.

In the opener, Stephen Sawyers, Rob Valerius and David Charles combined on a 1-hitter. The trio fanned 10 batters, walked one and allowed just a fifth-inning single.

Carson took control early, scoring six runs in the first, three on a Tyler Smith homer.

In the second game, Tyler Hutchins, David Eller and David Perce combined to fan 11, walk three and allow just one hit.

Carson hosts Reed Monday at 6:30 p.m. and then hosts Damonte Ranch Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

CHS JV SOFTBALL SWEEPS

Carson (13-2, 9-0) swept South Tahoe, winning the opener 6-3 and the nightcap 10-0. In the opener, Natalie Morrow struck out five and winning pitcher Christina Gallegos struck out seven while allowing no runs.

Elayna Shine had a hit and two runs, Lauren Knorzer had two hits and two RBI, Marissa Lucido had three hits, a run and two RBI, Ali Thompson had a hit and a run.

In the nightcap, Gallegos pitched a complete game shutout in the game that was called after five innings. Ashley Saarem had two hits, two runs and an RBI, Shine had two hits, including a double, two runs and an RBI, Marissa Lucido had two hits, including a triple, two runs and two RBI, Sara Shores doubled and Lindsay Burroughs added a hit, run and an RBI . Marcela Watson also played well defensively.
