United Blood Services on Winnie Lane hosted a grand reopening Wednesday to unveil its newly redecorated office.

"We want to let people know this is a really nice place to come to now," said Alana Ross, donor recruitment supervisor for Carson City.

Ross said the new paint, linoleum and ceilings compliment the new furniture, which replaces the sterile atmosphere that's been in place since 1991.

"We take donors' convenience and time seriously so we decided to give our Carson City Community Donation Center a facelift," said Ross.

About 550 people donate at the center every month, she said. Carson City, along with the United Blood Services offices in Reno and Sparks, supply all the blood to 22 hospitals in Northern Nevada.

Donor Recruitment Director Steve Thomas said to do so effectively the Carson City center needs to see 25 to 30 donors every day.

Volunteer blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. Additional height and weight requirements apply to donors 22 and younger. Donors who are 16 must have a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian.

Potential donors can make an appointment by going to www.UnitedBlood

Services.org or calling 887-9111.

Right now, after each blood donation, donors receive a pint of Model Dairy ice cream.
