130 YEARS AGO

The Resolutes of Virginia played a baseball match with the Amities of this city at Treadway's park. It was all in all the most exciting game of baseball ever contested on the turf of this city and drew a large crowd of spectators. The interest manifested was so intense that old Farmer Treadway, who despises baseball as a 'calamity,' secured a front seat to watch. When Roxbury made his first hit, five hundred people held their breaths to see where the sphere would finally land and Vic Muller, who was just lifting his glass of beer to his lips, left the cup untasted until a catch was made by Clarkson. Yells could be heard as far away as the St. Charles Hotel. Carson won by a score of 8 to 7.

110 YEARS AGO

Three alarms of fire have been turned in during the past two days and in each instance a serious conflagration was eminent. In each case the fire department is compelled to pull a heavy chemical engine and heavy hose carts to the fire wherever the fire is located. It is time we get an auto chemical engine which also will convey the hose cart to the fire. Mr. Property owner, what are you going to do about it? (editorial).

80 YEARS AGO

Hawthorne has lost its last old remnant of the mining days. China Joe, the only remaining Chinese resident, died Sunday at his cabin. China Joe was the last of the large Chinese population that lived in Hawthorne during the early days. He was formerly a cook for James Kane of Bodie.

50 YEARS AGO

Governor Grant Sawyer is expected to receive a report from the Public Service Commission regarding western Nevada's 29-hour power failure this week. About 90,000 people were without power in a 15,000-square-mile area when a forest fire at Donner destroyed four transmission lines.

20 YEARS AGO

Stevie Ray Vaughan is killed in a helicopter crash along with four other persons from Eric Clapton's entourage.

10 YEARS AGO

By the end of the summer, traffic on South Carson Street may get better when the Nevada Department of Transportation changes a two-mile stretch from four lanes to six lanes.
