130 YEARS AGO

Night before last Officers Duncan and Hawthorne made a raid on a disreputable house run by Emma Goldsmith. On kicking in the door, the lights were extinguished and some of the occupants were left including Charles Van Dorn, George Duffy and Emma Goldsmith. Van Dorn and Duffy were bound over with charges to the Grand Jury with Goldsmith fined $50 and given 25 days imprisonment. Mr James Duffy, father of one of the men, charged a complaint in an effort to rid Duffy of the bad habit.

100 YEARS AGO

The Halley Comet is coming in March. Our celestial visitor is causing much comment. Our visitor came last on November 18, 1835. The coming of the comet has been blamed for major calamities through time. At the end of March it will appear in the morning sky as a much unbelievable spectacle. Towards May 18 it will even be visible in daylight (The next coming of Halley's Comet is 28 July 2061).

70 YEARS AGO

Lester Groth, a resident of the area for 30 years, has become a candidate for the school board. As well as being a parent, Groth is a member of the Carson City Band and American Legion.

50 YEARS AGO

Two bills are in the legislature that will allow the Nevada Employment Security Department to start construction on a new building next summer.

20 YEARS AGO

Unsafe levels of lead contamination were found in sinks in four Carson City schools and the contaminated sinks have been shut down, the school board was told recently.
