A number of accidents caused by reduced visibilty and freezing fog have forced the Nevada Highway Patrol to reroute southbound traffic through Washoe Valley.
Currently NHP is working five accidents near Bellevue Bridge in the southbound lanes and three others are various points in the valley.
"This morning we are handling several crashes in Washoe Valley on the southbound US 395 highway," said Trooper Chuck Allen. "Dense freezing fog has made driving conditions extremely challenging. Because of the limited visibility and to prevent more accidents from happening, we are rerouting southbound traffic onto State Route 429 (Old 395) at Bowers Mansion. Northbound traffic is not impacted."
The snowstorm that made its way into northern Nevada late Saturday night into yesterday resulted in numerous calls for service for public safety personnel on the Reno-Sparks highways.
Troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol were dispatched to 108 reported accidents from 5 a.m. Sunday morning through midnights.
Allen said the busiest time frame during the snow storm was between 5 and 8 p.m.
"Because of the falling temperatures, every roadway that had any amount of moisture had frozen resulting in numerous spin outs and several accidents primarily on Interstate 80 between the California state line and the Keystone interchange," said Allen.
No serious injuries were reported.
