130 YEARS AGO

Pete Dalton, also known as the "Mountain Sport" has been sentenced to 23 years in San Quentin for highway robbery. During his time, he has spent some 23 years and nine months in jail for various offenses. Travelers in Nevada County will miss the "genial phiz" of this active highwayman for years to come.

100 YEARS AGO

Tahoe Tavern and other resorts on the water at Lake Tahoe are now open for the season. It is said that the Tahoe Tavern, one of the newest establishments, is already full. The California Travel Association has sent over some 250 people. Those traveling by car should note it is a pleasant experience with the roads open from Reno to Truckee, but poor between Truckee and Tahoe.

70 YEARS AGO

Frank Bartholomew, one of the vice presidents of United Press, and pacific coast manager for the worldwide press agency, will come to Carson City in the next few days in hopes of building seven dwelling houses at the corner west of North Carson and north of John Street based on plans that won first place at the New York world's fair last year.

50 YEARS AGO

A. E. "Art" Bernard has joined Carson Realty after passing his state broker's license test. Bernard, who was state prison warden, 1951-59 and state mine inspector 1947-1951 was previously at Home Lumber Supply.

20 YEARS AGO

A stay of execution has been lifted by the U. S. Supreme Court for Thomas Ball, 26, paving the way for his execution. The court said Ball was competent to waive his right to further proceedings. Only Ball himself can stop the execution.
