Carson boys win second straight 4A match

SPARKS - Carson High's boys soccer team won its second straight road match, knocking off Reed 3-1 Wednesday night.

Carson is 2-0-0 entering its home opener at 11 a.m. Saturday against Damonte Ranch.

"I'm very happy with how both the varsity and JV played," first-year coach Eric Masters said. "We've been working on defense for the past month, so it was nice to score three goals. It was good to see Jason Martinez getting a couple of goals under his belt.

"Michael Samii played fantastic. Zach Smith and Victor Romero also played well."

Carson opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Luis Camacho played a 40-yard diagonal ball to Sam Hutchinson, who found the back of the net on a half-volley.

Reed evened the score right before the half on a "bad goal kick," Masters said.

Carson took a 2-1 lead in the 69th minute when Jaime Lopez played a through ball to Martinez, who beat the goalie. Carson scored again three minutes later off a corner kick by Sam Hutchinson. Martinez was able to head the ball past the Reed keeper.

Goalie Marco Magallon had four saves.

JV SOCCER

CARSON BLANKS REED

SPARKS - Jorge Rodriguez scored twice while Daniel Zuber and Francisco Barrios added a score apiece to lead the Senators to a 4-0 win.

Zuber, Samuel Bruketta and Miguel Ortiz all added assists.

Goalie Gustavo Villagrana had two saves. Nathan King, Arnaldo Diaz and Mario Escalante played well defensively.

VOLLEYBALL

CARSON EDGES RENO

RENO - Carson bounced back from a slow start to knock off the Huskies 15-25, 25-23, 26-28, 25-21 and 15-12 Wednesday night.

Carson, 1-0 in league, visits Reed at 6 p.m. today.

"It was a game of streaks and runs," Carson coach Justin Malley said. "It was just a question of who got the ball at the end. We were tight to start. It was a matter of settling down and playing.

"We were up 20-15 in Game 3 and choked it away. For them to bounce back was nice. We recovered in the fourth game to send it to five," Malley said.

Elysse Virden led Carson with 20 kills and three blocks, while Jeanette Van Sickle had 18 kills, four blocks and three aces. Bailey Valente had 25 assists and three aces. Sarah Lushina had 13 digs, seven kills, three blocks and four aces. Courtney Hack contributed 20 assists while Kristalei Wolfe had 11 digs with Jazmyn Stokes, Alyson Christl and Angela Augusta contributing 10 digs each.

In JV play, Carson lost 25-15, 22-25 and 12-15. McKenzie Price, Savannah Smith, Kamryn Forrest and Brooklyn Maw all performed well.

In freshman action, Carson lost 14-25, 25-21, 11-15. Skylar Jones and Jennifer Purcell performed well. No stats were available.

YERINGTON DEF. DOUGLAS

The Yerington volleyball team's stellar receiving game was enough to counter Douglas' potent attack as the Lions picked up a four-game win in a matchup between two of the top squads in Northern Nevada in Minden Wednesday night.

Yerington won 25-22, 15-25, 26-24, 25-20 in a match that saw the lead change hands 16 times.

Makenna Lommori and Brooke Aiazzi led the way for the Lions (17-1). Lommori had 18 kills and 13 assists, while Aiazzi had nine kills, two aces and 22 digs. Liz Rogers dished out 17 assists and Maddie Hull-Taylor contributed 24 digs.

Douglas had an outstanding night from its outside tandem of Shannon Dugan (16 kills, 12 digs, 2 blocks, one ace) and Brenna White (16 kills, eight blocks, 14 digs).

Emily Garcia led the team in blocks with 13 and Mia Townsell added 15 digs.

Garcia had six kills, Keely Latham had four, Savannah Wood had two and Erin Allison and Carly McCullough each had one. Allison added four blocks and Latham, Wood and McCullough had three each.

Nikki Chavez had 10 digs, Allison and Hailey Sclafani each had four and Jackie Harper and Heidi Schefcik each had three. Harper led the team with 22 assists while Sclafani had 20.

The loss was Douglas' first of the year. They dropped to 9-1 overall.

DAYTON TOPS INCLINE

The Dust Devils improved to 15-2 with a 25-16, 25-15 and 25-14 win over Incline.

Madison Foley had 10 kills, two aces and nine digs while Jamie Darragh led in kills with 11. Kathie Arias had six kills. Amanda Arana and MacKenzie Kielty had solid floor games.

The Dayton JV squad won 25-15 and 25-15.

Dayton hosts Elko on Friday and Spring Creek on Saturday.
