COMMUNITY SPORTS BRIEFLY: Daykin, Hoppe win titles at Thunder Canyon

Nevada Appeal Staff Report

Tyler Daykin and Karen Hoppe won low gross championships at the Thunder Canyon Country Club championship.

Daykin carded a 36-hole total of 152 to beat Steve Rydel by 17 shots. Hoppe carded a two-round total of 167, edging Lynn Greer by one shot.

The Cockeriils, Charlie and Kathy, were the low net winners. Charlie finished at 136, while Kathy was at 145.

Mike Judge (142), Leland Sullivan (143), Bob Oglesby (145) and Steve Loos (145) rounded out the top five in the Nevada Flight. Roger Wilson won the Lightning Flight with a 142, while Mike Maloy and Vic Camp tied for second at 146.

Pam Whalen won the Washoe Flight with a 147, while Ellen Ewing took the Sierra Flight with a 149. Susan Camp was second to Ewing with a 152, while Joyce Powell and Nancy Maloy were third with 153s.

Julius Lorentzen won the junior championship with a 165 with Ryan Leuty finishing second at 211.

Jr. Midgets open

season with win

After surrendering a touchdown to South Lake Tahoe on the first drive, the Carson Jr. Midgets tightened up and came away with a 14-6 win.

The game-winning score came late in the fourth quarter when Colby Brown threw a 25-yard scoring pass to Caden Lehman. Brady O'Keefe scored the first Carson touchdown on a 7-yard run.

Josiah Pongasi had two interceptions for Carson.

The Jr. Midgets play Douglas at Stodick Park on Friday at 6 p.m.

In other Pop Warner games:

• The Carson Pee Wee squad scored with less than three minutes to play to knock off the Sparks Steelers 20-14 last Friday night.

Dennis Krueger scored all three Carson touchdowns, including the game-winner.

Coach Bret Andreas lauded his defense for its effort.

Carson plays the Sparks Wolfpack on Saturday.

• The Carson Tiny Mite Blue squad dropped a 30-12 decision to Reno despite an outstanding effort by Jacob Trejo.

Trejo had 14 carried for 164 yards and both of Carson's scores (45 and 35 yards). He also played well on defense, registering 9.5 tackles.

Eli Foutz, Anthony Alvarado, Brandon Mendoza, Cody Neal, Jonah Moniz and Jacob Chavez played well on the offensive line. Mendoza also had three tackles while Ryan Sear added 2.5 tackles.

Fuller wins event

at Silver Oak

Jim Fuller fired a net 62 to win the Silver Oak Men's Club event on Sept. 5.

Paul Jorgensen was second with a 66 and Bill Prowse was third at 69. Larry Johnson (70) and Kyle Menath (71) rounded out the top five.

Baker starts season with 300

The Thursday men's senior bowling league at Gold Dust West started the season with some terrific bowling. On Sept. 2 Bill Baker bowled a 300 game. Baker is sponsored by the B&B Pro Shop.

Two tied for

Mosconi lead

The Big Dogs and Cues Yer Daddy are tied for first with 57 points apiece in the Mosconi Division in the Carson City chapter of the American Poolplayers Association.

Casey Richards of Support Rackless Habits leads the 6-7 tier with 42 points, six better than James Underwood II (Squeeze Play), Daniel McRae (Rack Fink) and Alex Gutierrez (Role Models). Anthony Cupp of Fun Tickets and Robert Matteson of Trouble Makers are tied for the 4-5 tier lead at 36. Carri Kerr of Crowbar leads the 2-3 tier with 29, two better than Justin Harris (Fun Tickets) and James Panos (Scratch Masters).

Twisted Stix with Attitudes leads the Comstock Division with 906 points, 13 ahead of 9-Spoke.

McRae of Cornbread & Whiskey leads the 6-9 tier with 41 points. Jason Kochamp of All Work & No Play leads the 4-5 tier with 35 points, two ahead of Jerry Lehman of Tommy's. Rebecca Brooks leads Poke 'N' Hope leads the 1-3 tier with 27 points, two better than Kenneth Collins of Pocket Puppies.

Carson 7th graders are 4-0

The Carson Middle School seventh grade girls basketball team is off to a 4-0 start.
