The Nevada Appeal's Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes positive achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out others that missed the mark.SILVER DOLLAR: To the national historic landmark designation bestowed upon the McKeen Motor Car last week. The Nevada State Railroad Museum’s restored motor car was put on the national list by Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar. The museum took on a restoration of the car in 1995, making it the only McKeen Motor Car able to move under its own power. Nevada State Historic Preservation Officers Ron James called the designation noteworthy, saying “There are only 2,500 National Historic Landmarks in the nation.”The car is operated four times annually, including on Nevada Day.WOODEN NICKEL: Whether we can blame it on election tensions or not, it seems respect for each other and their valuables has been flushed down the toilet lately.First there was the 200-percent increase in residential burglaries in September. Then, there were the reports of campaign signs and party headquarters being vandalized last weekend. And finally, there was the string of vehicle burglaries that took place in Northwest Carson last weekend.Carson City Sheriff’s officials urge homeowners and car owners to lock their homes and cars. They said the residential burglaries took place when homeowners left windows open or unlocked, making easy targets for the thieves. As for your automobile, don’t leave valuables in your car, and be sure to lock your doors. As far as the lack of civility this election season, the diverse opinions that American voters share is what makes this country the greatest in the world. Whether you agree or disagree with your neighbor aside, you should at least respect his or her beliefs, even if they go against yours.
