Busy weekend for Wave

The Greenwave will be all over the northern part of the state this weekend.

From the annual Fallon Elks Invitational track meet in Fallon to the baseball and softball teams traveling to Elko County, Fallon’s spring teams will be busy beginning today.

The track and field team is coming off a good performance in Fernley last weekend as Fallon gets ready to host the Elks at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Edward Arciniega Athletic Complex.

Fallon hurdlers Nick Marsan and Nathan Heck dominated the 110-meter and 300 events. Marsan won the 110 highs, while Heck was first in the 300 intermediates.

For the Lady Wave, Elena Murray won the 100 hurdles and long jump in her first meet of the season. Katie O’Brien blew past the field in the 3,200.

On the diamonds, the Lady Wave are looking to continue their shutout streak after sweeping the Mount Rose league in last weekend’s crossover.

Fallon faces Ruby Mountain League foes Elko, Spring Creek and Lowry in Elko and Spring Creek.

Fallon (4-4) blanked South Tahoe, Truckee and Sparks by double-digits last week after winning only one game in the preseason Sacramento tournament.

Over-dominating hitting and strong pitching headlined Fallon’s weekend. Fallon tallied double-digits in hits in each of the three games, while the pitching staff silenced the bats and is proving to be strong enough to help Fallon get back to the state tournament.

Fallon will get a rematch from last year’s state final when it faces Lowry in this weekend’s crossover. The Buckaroos are down this year but continue to prove that they can compete well in the league. Fallon will also face Elko and Spring Creek, which could contend for a state title.

On the other diamond sits a Fallon baseball squad that won one of three games in the Mount Rose crossover.

After getting a walkoff win over South Tahoe, Fallon (2-5) lost to reigning state champion Truckee before losing by 10 to Sparks.

It doesn’t get any easier this weekend, though, as Elko looks to be the favorite to win state after coming one run short of upsetting Truckee last year. Spring Creek could pose problems, too, and Lowry has developed into a good rival for Fallon based on the last two postseasons.

The swimming teams are doing well early in the season after competing in the Douglas and Bishop Manogue meets last week.

Fallon swept Manogue in Carson with close victories as the boys won by 12 points, while the girls had more cushion with a 28-point victory.

Fallon will take on Lowry at 2 p.m. at the Alf Sorensen Pool in Reno.

Boys golf is coming off its first tournament of the season as it competed in Dayton on Thursday and travels to Fernley today.

Fallon has more than 20 golfers in the program as the Greenwave looks to get back into the postseason mix and win another state title after missing out last season.
