The Carson City Symphony, directed by David Bugli, will open its 30th season at 4 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Carson City Community Center’s Bob Boldrick Theater, 851 E. William St., with “The Lure of Tropics & Travel.”
Joshua Russell, an expert on Haitian piano music, will perform “Fantaisie Tropicale” by Haitian composer Justin Elie, and “Grande Tarantelle” by New Orleans native Louis Moreau Gottschalk. The concert will include “Andalucia Suite” by Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona and “Symphony No. 1” by Franz Schubert.
Pre-show entertainment will be provided by STRAZZ, Carson City Symphony’s youth strings ensemble, in the lobby beginning at 3 p.m. The audience is invited to a free concert preview in the Sierra Room at 3:15 p.m. and a dinner reception after the concert at Red’s Old 395 Grill. The preview, hosted by Conductor David Bugli, will include discussions with soloist Joshua Russell about the concert, composers, and music. Concert admission is $15 per person for general admission; $12 for seniors, students, and Symphony Association members; and free for ages 16 and younger. The performance is part of World Music Days, an annual global event affirming the ideals of tolerance, friendship, and shared humanity, inspired by the life and work of journalist and musician Daniel Pearl.
