Election filing opens Monday

Filing opens Monday for individuals seeking local or statewide offices in the 2014 election.

Erin Montalvo, who supervises the filing for the Churchill County Clerk’s/Treasurer’s Office, said on Thursday filing for State Supreme Court and district judges occurred in January, and incumbent Judge Thomas Stockard of the Tenth Judicial Court in Fallon will not face opposition.

Montalvo said the Churchill County Clerk’s/Treasurer’s Office opens at 8 a.m. on Monday, and the two week filing period ends March 14. Hours for filing are from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. for each of the 10 days. The filing fee is $100 for commissioner (District 2), assessor, clerk/treasurer, district attorney, public administrator, recorder and sheriff and $30 for Mosquito & Weed Abatement Board and the School Board.

Only the Mosquito and Weed Abatement Board and the School Board are nonpartisan. Incumbents due for re-election to the Mosquito Board include Christy Lattin, Jay Ligenfelter and Michael Spencer; incumbent trustees are Richard Gent. Clay Hendrix, Nona McFarlane and Carmen Schank.

The term for all local offices is four years.

Incumbents Art Mallory (district attorney), Ben Trotter (sheriff), Kelly Helton (clerk/treasurer) and Pete Olsen have told the LVN they plan to run for re-election. Jay Horsley, a former Churchill County Sheriff’s captain, told the LVN he plans to challenge Trotter for sheriff.

Joan Simms, county recorder, and Norma Greene, county assessor, have both decided to retire. Jan Brown is the current public administrator.

The statewide offices up for a four-year term include the following:

Governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, state treasurer, state controller and attorney general. Only the governor’s race features an incumbent in Brian Sandoval, while the other races, the current candidates are all termed out.

District offices include representative in Congress from District 2 held by Mark Amodei, a two-year term; one member from the state senate, District 17, held by incumbent James Settelmyer, four-year-term; and state Assembly, District 38, being vacated by Tom Grady because of term limits. Former Churchill County Commissioner Norm Frey and Smith Valley’s Dr. Robin Titus said they plan to run for the office.

Montalvo said Churchill County has 11,6822 active voters based after the last election. Republicans lead the county with 6,599, followed by Democrats with 2,616. All other parties include independent voters comes in at 2,467.

The primary election is June 10, and the general election is set for Nov. 4.
