Corkill, others take on Reno Rodeo

Several athletes who have called Fallon home are competing in the 95th annual Reno Rodeo this week.

Jade Corkill (team roping), Kourtney Woods (barrel racing), Kassi Venturacci (barrel racing), Jace Allen Angus (saddle bronc), Clint Harry (team roping) and Sterling Lambert (steer wrestling) are in action at the Reno Rodeo at the Reno Livestock Events Center through Saturday.

While Lambert doesn’t compete until Thursday night, Corkill, Woods, Angus, Venturacci and Harry have seen plenty of action since the event kicked off last week.

After the rodeo’s third performance on Sunday, Corkill and teammate Clay Tryan (Billings, Mont.) scored a first-place time in the second round as they roped the steer in 4.6 seconds. They also had a 4.6 second-performance time on Saturday.

Corkill and Tryan competed in the Bob Feist Invitational Team Roping on Monday, which had an $800,000 purse, and then followed with regular performances that night and on Tuesday.

Corkill and Tryan looked good after the first go in the BFI team roping event, scoring a 6.6 and earning a $3,000 payoff to finish second. They proceeded to finished 11th in the second go round at 7.22 and then 17thin the third at 7.23. The event ended with an 18th-place finish in the fourth go round at 7.67.

Corkill’s no stranger to the big rodeos after he and his partner won the world championship at last year’s National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. Corkill, a heeler, finished last year with $178,056 prize money to take home the gold buckle by $11,000 while Tryan finished about $8,000 ahead to win for header with $179,687.

Woods was in 12th in WPRA barrel racing after going 18.1 in the first round and 17.72 in the second and third rounds. Her time in the second performance was the fourth best.

Angus finished seventh in saddle bronc riding in Friday’s opening performance as he scored 72 points. Bryce Miller finished first in the event with 80 points.

Venturacci opened the barrel racing on Friday with a time of 18 seconds while Kimmie Wall (Rossevelt, Utah) scored a 17.49. In the second performance on Saturday, she scored a 36.29 on two runs in the aggregate.

Harry and his partner, Shane Erickson of Terrebonne, Ore., competed in Monday’s fourth performance but recorded a no time in each round.
