Carson High has enjoyed tremendous success in Blair Roman’s seven years at the helm, winning five division/league titles.

That success has translated into bigger numbers throughout the program, so it’s not really a surprise when approximately 150 players showed up Saturday for the first day of football practice at Carson.

“The first day, it was good,” Roman said. “It was a good, quick workout. We set the tone for Monday.

“I’m not sure if it’s the most we’ve had (for three levels), but it’s up there for sure. With the success we’ve had, there are a lot of kids that want to be part of the program. We try to create a positive thing here, and I think we’ve been able to do that.”

The Senators, regional runners-up last year, will have one morning practice on Monday, two short practices on Tuesday and then start going after-school only on Wednesday, which is the first day teachers report for work. School starts next Monday at CHS.

Carson opens its season Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. against Reed High at University of Nevada’s Mackay Stadium.

Roman also announced a few staff changes. He said the varsity staff remains intact, but added Kiko Vega is now working full-time with the varsity.

Tom Ross, a veteran coach, replaces Paul Carter as head JV coach. Carter left the area, and is now coaching football and pursuing an administrative credential at Dordt College in Iowa.

Ross has coached at both Mojave and Bishop Gorman high schools in Las Vegas. John March, who played at South Tahoe, and later coached the Vikings, is assisting. Rod Estrada, the line coach for JV, continues at that same spot. A new face on the JV staff is former star Dylan Rooker, who graduated from Carson last spring.

Jim Bean is the new head freshman coach. Bean replaces Billy McHenry, who’s helping the varsity squad on game nights, according to Roman.
