Veteran racer Lonnie Grace of Fallon enjoys a comfortable lead in Super Pro. Racing resumes this weekend at Top Gun Raceway.
After taking a month break from Octane Fest, Top Gun Raceway lights up today and Saturday for two days of action capped by a special “GM” race.
Race director John Stauverman said tonight is $5 racing for those who want to have some fun racing their cars down Top Gun’s quarter-mile straight track. He said the racing runs from 6-11 p.m.
Top Gun Raceway, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary, is located 15 miles south of Fallon off U.S. Highway 95.
As for the points racing on Saturday, Stauverman said several categories are close among the top five racers with racing more than midway through the season. Gates open at 8 a.m., and racing is between 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m.
Thirty points between two Fallon competitors separates first and second place in Sportsman. Tami Phillips recorded a win on June 14, the last racing date, and leads the division with 469 points. Walt Stacey, another vetreran of the Top Gun track, trails with 439 points. Fernley racer Dan Murphy is in third place with 359 points.
As with Phillips, Jim Grace of Fallon took first place on June 14 to add to his lead in Pro. Through nine races, he has 450 points compared to Fernley’s Alvin Clarke’s 395. Kevin Morris of Sparks sits in third place with 387 points.
Super Pro has Lonnie Grace leading the pack with 408 points. He and Tom Brown of Gardnerville each garnered 42 points on June 14, but Brown trails the Fallon racer by 66 points. Laurie Pickett of Winnemucca trails in third place with 320 points.
With five race days remaining, Jason Arrien of Winnemucca leads in points in Rookie of the Year closely followed by Nicholas Morris of Sparks and three other racers.
Morris is currently the leader in Junior Dragsters with 218 points. Robin Engel of Fernley trails with 196 points.
A special feature for Saturday is “GM” racing. Stauvernman said this is a special race organized for only General Motors cars. He said a special race for Fords was held earlier in the season, and a special race for Dodge cars is set for Aug. 29.
