100 Years Ago

The following is from a New York paper and shows that the Lincoln Highway movies will attract attention throughout the country: A carload of high explosive powder hauled in four wagons and drawn by twenty-two horses, some of them jumping over the chain in making the turn, rounded a corner in the streets of Fallon Nev., recently, displaying to interested spectators a glimpse of the West and her transportation problems in teaming freight to the Nevada mines. Hard following came a stage coach of the style of fifty years ago, vivid in the memory of the West of yesterday. This moving picture is going to offer a greater variety of scenic displays of transcontinental America than has ever before been presented.

75 Years Ago

Jackie Crew, seven year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralston Crew and grandson of Mrs. J. C. Mills of Fallon, likes playing with rattlesnakes. When Mrs. Crew returned from a shopping tour recently, she found Jack gripping a long, fat rattlesnake near the button, watching it wriggle as he held a coffee can over its hissing poisonous head. Without alarming Jack, Mrs. Crew dispatched the reptile with haste and mentally swooned. Jackie had a real adventure, and what the boy doesn’t know about rattlers and how deadly they are cannot be found in the modern encyclopedia. The Fallon Standard, Wednesday, October 23, 1940

An Eagle Squadron of 34 Americans who range from crop dusters to playboys of New York society, are ready to take to the air for England ... At Brennero, pass in the alps between Germany and Italy, Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini held another of their strange conferences. The meeting was in a railroad car with the blinds pulled down, guarded by foot soldiers, artillery and anti-aircraft guns. The Fallon Standard, Wednesday, October 23, 1940

Before one o’clock on Monday you were in Kent’s store shopping. You wore a white blouse, blue stripped slacks and brown oxfords. Your wavy dark hair was worn in a long bob and you had on dark glasses. You were telling the clerk in the meat department that you knew how to cook venison. Are you this young woman? If so, come to the office of the Fallon Standard and receive a guest ticket for two admissions to either the show on Saturday, “The Westerner” starring Gary Cooper, or Sunday night when “Knute Rockne-All American” is the picture.
