Big guys got to be little guys again at the Corporate Pinewood Derby, presented by the Nevada Area Council of Boy Scouts of America and sponsored by the Dolan Auto Group in Reno. The competition was held Nov. 2 at the new Lexus dealership on South Virginia Street and proved boys will be boys.

Some of the race cars — mainly built from Scout kits containing the wood bodies — were sleek, low-profiled and outfitted with lead weights while others were ... unusual. Reno Aces’ car was a furry blue with the Aces logo while Reno Media Group’s offering was a fishing boat with fisherman, fish on a line and a (fish) dog. While each raced to finish last, they made it down the track during every heat.

But the guys with real auto experience under their belts — the Dolan mechanics and customer service providers — swept the field and took a trophy back to their Toyota, Kia-Mazda and Lexus locations and also retained the perpetual trophy.

Also participating were the Eldorado, Peppermill and Nugget casinos, KOLO-Channel 8, Fox 11 and Lotus Radio. Scouter Jim Stewart set up his electronic racetrack that captured first-second-third-and-fourth places and provided times and awarded points as Ryan Dolan provided race commentary.

The Corporate Pinewood Derby is a fun fundraiser for Boy Scouts as the organization serves more than 6,700 youths across 23 counties in Northern Nevada and Northeastern California. There are 448 units made up of Packs, Troops, Varsity Teams, Venturing Crews and Explorer Posts.
