Heather Parsons successor of pediatric dental practice

Native Nevadan Heather M. Parsons, DMD took ownership of Valley Pediatric Dentistry in Minden on Aug. 16. Along with her team, Parsons will be providing Northern Nevada youth with pediatric dental care.

After graduating from Virginia City High School, Parsons received her undergraduate degree in Biochemistry with Distinction from the University of Nevada, Reno. In efforts to fulfill her desire to practice dentistry, she studied at the Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine where she obtained her Doctorate, Magna Cum Laude in 2011. In 2013, Dr. Parsons received her Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from Stony Brook University Hospital (SUNY) in New York. In 2015, she joined Valley Pediatric Dentistry as an associate where she found the opportunity to practice pediatric dental care in her native home state.

Dr. Parsons’ volunteerism includes Give Kids a Smile (hosted by Nevada Dental Society New Dentist Committee), which provides preventative and restorative dental services to patients at no cost, and Remote Area Medical (RAM). RAM is a free medical, dental and vision program which offers services to rural residents.

Walmart makes $70,0000 donation to local programs

There was a lot of laughter and many hugs at a luncheon in Silver Springs as Bruce Barlow of Walmart presented a check for $70,000 to benefit the Dayton and Silver Stage Food Pantries.

Walmart’s donations over the last five years have helped sustain Healthy Communities Coalition’s food pantries and its unique food, health and community development hubs.

This year as in past years, Walmart donated a total of $70,000 to the food pantries in Dayton and Silver Springs, and to Community Chest in Virginia City. Each year, Community Chest’s Erik Schoen has written a proposal for the donation, and Walmart has responded with an annual donation of $35,000 to sustain Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey’s pantries in Silver Springs and Dayton, plus $35,000 to support Community Chest’s employment program, which places employment experts at both of the food pantries and at Community Chest in Virginia City. The employment specialists help pantry visitors locate job openings, develop resumes, and connect with job training opportunities, in addition to assisting with Medicaid, Disability and SNAP (food stamps) questions.

During the last year, with the Walmart donation, plus USDA Commodities, Food Bank of Northern Nevada, local fundraisers and donations, and more than 25,000 hours of work by hundreds of community volunteers, the pantries in Dayton and Silver Springs have reached 8,685 individuals with more than 578,977 pounds of food. Walmart also helps sustain the food backpack program for children attending schools in Dayton and Silver Springs, a program that supplies 4,068 weekend meals every month.

Local construction company partners with ProThera

Miles Construction, a Northern Nevada general contractor, is partnering with ProThera, Inc., which specializes in the research, formulation and manufacture of professional-quality dietary supplements.

ProThera is expanding its operation in the Reno area to increase efficiencies and expand capabilities. The expansion project includes a complete remodel of a 75,000 square foot building on Trademark Drive in Reno.

Miles is responsible for the creation of several FDA-GMP rooms, each with individual climate control and dust recovery systems, as well as full wash-down capabilities. Additionally, existing office space is being remodeled to accommodate ProThera’s 114 employees, who are an integral part of the thriving community. Miles is partnered with BJG Architecture & Engineering, Savage and Son, Inc., Mt. Rose Heating and Air Conditioning, Inc. and Intermountain Electric for this project.
