Carson High School bowler needs help getting to world championships

Chesney Minor, co-captain of the Carson High bowling team, is looking for a little help.

Minor is trying to raise $1,600 in the next couple of weeks so she can attend the World Junior Bowling Championships scheduled for Reno starting June 16. The winner of the prestigious event would win $50,000 in scholarship money.

The money is being used for tournament entry fees and personal expenses (meals, transportation, housing).

Minor started bowling before she was eligible for kindergarten, but then stopped bowling in favor of club soccer. She was playing JV soccer at Douglas High when she suffered her fourth concussion in two years.

“Losing the sport I loved for more than seven years was challenging,” Minor said in an email. “Finding a new passion and being successful at it proved to be a challenge as well.”

Minor, because of medical issues from multiple concussions, is now being home schooled through Nevada Connections Academy. She achieved a 3.92 GPA last semester.

Besides her high school bowling, Minor bowls Saturday mornings in a youth league at Carson Lanes.

“I bowl in as many tournaments as possible in the area,” Minor said. “Last season, I won $800 in scholarship money.”

She was named an all-star in the High Desert Interscholastic Bowling Program. She was invited to bowl in the Greater Reno Sparks Youth Masters Tournament and took second place.

The boys and girls regional and all-league teams were announced earlier this week.

Carson was well represented, getting its coach and entire starting five recognized on either first team, second team and honorable mention for the boys. On the girls side, three players were honored.

The process has become watered down, and I would love to see it changed.

For instance, a team gets a certain amount of representation based on how they finished in league. Are you kidding me? What happened to picking the best players in the league? Isn’t that the whole point of all-league or all-region?

The boys and girls, if I’m not mistaken, usually select anywhere from 22 to 24 players total between first, second and honorable mention. I think it needs to be capped at 15 (first, second and third team) with no honorable mention. Coaches have to make hard decisions during games, why can’t they do the same thing in an all-league meeting?

When it comes to all-region limit it to 10 TOTAL... one team. Again, let’s make some tough choices.

There are some years when the High Desert is better than the Sierra League and vice versa. That should reflect in the regional voting.
