Nevada suffered twice as many roadway fatalities this May as there were in the same month of 2020.
In all, 32 people died in crashes during May compared to just 15 a year ago. Four of the first five months of this year have reported increases compared to 2020. Only February was down, from 26 to 22.
So far this calendar year, there have been 141 deaths on Nevada roads, 86 of them in Clark County and 16 in Washoe. The only other county with more than three fatalities is Nye which reported 14 through May’s end.
Clark County’s total deaths were up by 21 over a year ago. Washoe County, by comparison, was down one from a year ago.
The number of deaths of unrestrained occupants of vehicles — those not wearing seatbelts — was also up from 22 to 29.
Pedestrian deaths also increased – by one – to 35.
Twenty three motorcyclists have died versus 16 as of May last year. Three bicyclists have been killed compared to zero at this point in the year in 2020.
Carson City reported no fatalities through the end of May. The only other counties with zero deaths so far are Lander and Pershing.
Mineral and Storey counties each reported one death.
