Nevada Appeal reporter Jessica Garcia was recognized by the Nevada Association of School Boards on Saturday with its Media Award for Outstanding Education Reporting for 2022.

The award recognizes the role of media representatives in television, radio or online journalism who demonstrate excellence in the following areas: working to know the board president, superintendent and district communication director, as well as the district’s mission, goals and strategic plan; reporting school news in a fair, accurate and balanced manner; maintaining a policy of “no surprises” by always giving school officials the opportunity to comment on information to be aired or published; providing a high profile to positive news about school and district accomplishments; and visiting schools.

Garcia has covered education and Lyon County news for the Appeal since 2018. She also recently won first place in the Nevada Press Association Awards of Excellence for her coverage of CCSD’s superintendent search in the hire of Superintendent Andrew Feuling and third place for profile.

This is Garcia’s second NASB media award for her education reporting.
