The Department of Motor Vehicles in Carson City was evacuated Wednesday afternoon after a suspicious package was found alone in the lobby, according to first responders on scene. The building was reopened by 2:19 p.m.

Carson City Fire Department Capt. Diego Aramburu said the fire department responded around 1:30 p.m. to the location at 555 Wright Way. He said the suspicious package was an unattended backpack.

“It’s protocol to evacuate the building,” he said.

Because the site of the incident is a state building, the Nevada Capitol Police responded. Shortly before 2 p.m., Capitol Police Chief John Letos said a bomb-sniffing dog was en route. Twenty minutes later, the captain informed the Appeal officers had swept the building and found no harmful material. He said the backpack appeared to have been left alone inadvertently, and officials were locating the customer.
