Nevada’s graduation rate remains above 81 percent

The Nevada Department of Education (NDE) announced Friday that the class of 2023 maintained a graduation rate above 81 percent. The graduation rate for the class of 2023 is 81.39 percent, representing a slight decrease from 81.72 the previous year.

“These students were freshmen when COVID-19 shut down schools, meaning their entire high school career was shaped by the pandemic. Despite the unprecedented obstacles they faced, our students displayed remarkable resilience, and our educators have continued to provide unwavering support, adapting to ensure our students received the education they need to succeed,” said Jhone Ebert, State Superintendent of Public Instruction. “I am so proud of all they have accomplished."

Key takeaways from the Class of 2023 graduation data include:

  • For the second year in a row, Eureka County School District achieved a graduation rate of 100.0 percent.
  • Six districts had 2023 graduation rates that exceeded 90 percent. They include:
  • Eureka County School District at 100 percent
  • Storey County School District at 97.44 percent
  • Lincoln County School District at 96.83 percent
  • Pershing County School District at 95.35 percent
  • Humboldt County School District at 93.72 percent
  • Lander County School District at 90.91 percent
  • In 13 of Nevada's 17 school districts as well as the State Public Charter School Authority (SPCSA), students graduated at a higher rate than the state average of 81.39 percent.
  • Nine of Nevada's 17 school districts showed increases in graduation rates from the previous year, with Storey County School District showing the highest gain with 9.20 points.
  • Other districts with year-to-year increases in graduation rates include:
  • Churchill County School District with 4.41 percentage point increase,
  • Clark County School District with .19 percentage point increase,
  • Douglas County School District with 2.03 percentage point increase,
  • Elko County School District with 3.09 percentage point increase
  • Lander County School District with 5.38 percentage point increase,
  • Lincoln County School District with 1.31 percentage point increase o Lyon County School District with 1.84 percentage point increase
  • Mineral County School District with 8.58 percentage point increase
  • Migrant students maintained one of the highest graduation rates of all student groups at 100 percent.

Graduation rate comparison between 2022 and 2023 disaggregated by student race/ethnicity:

  • The graduation rate for students who identify as Hispanic/Latino decreased 0.65 percentage points to 80.01 percent.
  • The graduation rate for students who identify as American Indian/Alaska Native decreased 4.40 percentage points to 64.73 percent.
  • The graduation rate for students who identify as Asian increased .18 percentage points to 93.29 percent.
  • The graduation rate for students who identify as Black/African American increased 2.05 percentage points to 70.46 percent.
  • The graduation rate for students who identify with two or more races increased 0.63 percentage points to 82.18 percent.
  • The graduation rate for students who identify as Pacific Islanders decreased 4.41 percentage points to 79.84 percent.
  • The graduation rate for students who identify as White decreased 0.49 percentage points to 85.58 percent.

Graduation rate comparison between 2022 and 2023 disaggregated by student groups:

  • The graduation rate for students from families experiencing poverty decreased .13 percentage points to 81.41 percent.
  • The graduation rate for students with disabilities increased .85 percentage points to 66.76 percent.
  • The graduation rate for students who are English Learners (EL) increased 0.20

percentage points to 72.77 percent.

  • The graduation rate for students who are experiencing transient housing (homeless)

decreased .61 percentage points to 61.13 percent.

  • The graduation rate for students in Career and Technical Education (CTE) increased 3.54 percentage points to 95.84 percent.
