Wrestling: Fallon second at Lovelock tournament

A day after the team couldn’t advance any wrestlers to the second day of one of the hardest tournaments in the country, the Greenwave turned around with a second-place performance in the Lovelock tournament on Saturday.

Fallon finished the single-day tournament with 165 points as Lowry won the 23-team event with 213. Fernley was third with 156 points followed by Spanish Springs in fourth with 147.5 and Reno in fifth at 129.

Fallon hosts Fernley today for JV and varsity duals at the Elmo Dericco Gymnasium before traveling to Reno next week for the Sierra Nevada Classic.

Carson Melendy (138 pounds) pinned his first two opponents before recording a technical fall and 17-4 major decision win over Pershing County’s Jeffrey Elerick to win his weight class.

Quentin Hornbeak (165) lost a close 3-1 decision to Los Gatos’ Lucas Pannell in the first-place match to finish 4-1.

Andre Green (126) finished third with a 4-1 record after decisioning Reno’s Ethan Cota, 9-5, in the final match. Lonnie Adams (132) finished third with a 5-1 record after pinning Lowry’s Jayden Howard in the third period. Jaiden McFadden (138) finished third with a 4-1 record after falling to Elerick in the semifinals. He won his next two, including a fall over South Tahoe’s Brady Higgins in the final match.

Troy Shelton (165) finished fourth with a 4-2 record as he fell to Reno’s Jackson Sellers in the second period of the final match.

Neal McIntyre (120) didn’t place but finished 4-2 to score 14 team points after falling in the consolation semifinal round. Andrew Douglas (144) didn’t place but finished 3-2 to score nine team points after falling in the consolation semifinal round. Dustin Stritenberger (144) didn’t place but finished 2-2 to score seven team points after falling in the consolation’s third round.

In a stacked 157-pound weight class, Manuel Karaway finished 5-2 and scored 16 team points and Macray O’Neill finished 4-2 as both fell in the consolation semifinal round.

Colton Blankenship (175) didn’t place but he finished 3-2 to score 10 team points after falling to Carson’s Konnor Crisp in the consolation semifinal. William Brady (285) didn’t place but finished 2-2 to score seven team points after falling in the consolation’s fifth round.

Carlos Valenzuela (190), Ashton McCourtney (190) and Tyson Wilson (215) each finished 1-2 with McCourtney and Wilson also scoring four team points apiece.

Evan Garcia (126), Rio Segura (126), Wyatt Lambert (144) and Jason Lewis (215) finished winless.

In the JV division, Maximilian Dahl (126) won his weight class with a 3-0 record with all matches running the full three periods, including a 12-0 major decision win over Fernley’s Nadera Muhammad. Kolby McFadden (157) placed third after going 3-1, including a fall over Carson’s Nathan Kuehner in the final match. Evan Innes (175) placed fourth after going 2-2, including a second-period fall to Lowry Gold’s Brogan Atkins.

In the girls division, Tommie Fitzer (126-140) finished 2-2 and Lacee Stoddard (111-125) was 1-2.

Fallon finished 68th out of 88 teams in the Reno Tournament of Champions on Friday at the Reno Events Center.

The Greenwave totaled 24.5 points as five wrestlers won at least one match in one of the toughest high school tournaments in the country.

Melendy (138) scored the team’s best record at 3-2, and Adams (138) and Hornbeak (165) were 2-2. Avery Dealoia (190) and O’Neill finished 1-2.
