Construction on schedule for second weir

The Truckee-Carson Irrigation District has decreased flows in the V-line and T-line canals this week to finish the construction of the emergency weir.

Incident Commander Caleb Cage said the second weir is under construction and will be completed this week. The new weir is adjacent to the 2017 weir and is three times larger. TCID said water will flow through the new weir shortly after completion.

According to TCID, a complete outage is expected to last two to three days on both canals.

“Some users may see a short interruption of service from the outage so we are asking users to plan their water orders accordingly,” TCID said in a statement.

TCID is encouraging water users not to wait until the last minute to order.

“Every effort will be made to keep the outage time as short as possible,” TCID said.

TCID expects to resume waterflows by the weekend.

Flood preparation news

• Public water systems: City of Fallon and Churchill County are completing preparations to safeguard wastewater and water treatment facilities and urge residents and businesses in flood-prone areas to sandbag their cleanout vents to reduce the risk of compromised systems should a high-water event occur.

Restaurants and businesses with grease interceptors should sandbag around those fixtures for the same reason.

• Berm along Pasture Road: Completed. Built to increase capacity for water storage in the Carson Lake Pasture east of U.S. Highway 95 south of Fallon.

• Sandbags: Free, pre-filled sandbags available for pick-up at 485 Miners Road on Mondays from 1-4 p.m.

 • Sandbag delivery requests: Contact the High-Water Call Center at 775-867-5923 and leave a message. Sandbag delivery available for those ages 60+ and the mobility-challenged who live on the Carson River.

 Calls will be returned weekdays from 11 a.m. to noon and 3 to 4 p.m. to schedule deliveries.

• The water call center telephone number is 775-867-5923, and it will be staffed weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The dedicated email address is Highwater23@churchillcountynv.gov.

• Residents should use the email address or telephone number for non-emergency calls.

• High-water mitigation officials have created a new interactive flood modeling map which is now available on the city of Fallon and Churchill County websites. This map allows residents to enter their address in the top right-hand corner and pull up the flood modeling map for their home or business.

Paper maps of the potential flood areas are posted at the main public entrance to the Churchill County Administrative Building, 155 N. Taylor St., in Fallon. This is the entrance at the corner of North Taylor and A Streets. The building is open to the public weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and residents are welcome to stop by to see the maps during those hours.

• Sandbags are only available for pick-up Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the county’s Miners Road yard from 10 a.m. to noon and again from 12:30-4 p.m.
