CCSD news: Veterans Day highlights

CHURCHILL COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL

The CCHS Military Student Committee, run by Heather Benjamin, held the second annual Veterans' Day barbecue. All CCHS current military and veteran families were invited to the event.

Over 50 students, family members, and staff enjoyed dinner as a thank you for their service and sacrifice. The evening started with the CCHS Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) color guard presenting the colors and then Chase Johnson and the CCHS Culinary students created and served a phenomenal barbecue. “There were lots of wonderful conversations and connections made during the event and I can't wait to do it again bigger and better next year,” Benjamin said.

CHURCHILL COUNTY MIDDLE SCHOOL

CCMS held their annual Veterans Day breakfast. The school had an outstanding turnout of their students and their families.

Each year, the CCMS Purple Star committee invites local service members and their families for breakfast on Veterans Day. Staff bring in the breakfast dishes for all to enjoy.

“We look forward to this event each year and are thankful for the service members and veterans in our community,” said Vice Principal Dr. Deana Porretta.

NUMA

In celebration of Veterans Day, Numa students wrote about veterans they knew and wanted to honor. They posted these writings and pictures on the Walls of Honor in Numa hallways.

Numa staff and students also honored Ken Brouse, one of their fifth-grade teachers, who served in both the Army and the Navy.

E.C. BEST

Veterans and active-duty families were invited to E.C. Best to help raise the flag and join the staff and students in a school-wide Pledge of Allegiance at the flagpole at the beginning of the school day.

LAHONTAN

Veterans and active-duty military members were invited to have coffee, juice, and doughnuts with their child at breakfast. Following breakfast, they accompanied their child to class and shared their military experience with the students.

“We typically do an assembly in honor of Veterans Day, but this year we wanted to try something different and knew we wanted it to be more persona,” said Principal Kimi Melendy. “By inviting all of our active duty and veteran families in we not only showed our appreciation to all of them but our staff also got to learn from them and their personal experiences right there along with the students in their classrooms which made it even more special.”
