Volleyball: Bighorns snap four-match losing streak

The Oasis Academy volleyball team snapped a four-match losing streak by sweeping Silver Stage in three games on Friday at the city-county gym.

After being swept by Pershing County on Wednesday, Oasis Academy defeated the Nighthawks, 26-24, 25-21 and 25-18.

Senior Shelbi Bracken and sophomore Grace Laca led the team in kills with five apiece, and junior Kirstin Detomasi and sophomores Alyssa Ayers and Dahlila Creer each had two. Ayers and Bracken led the team in aces with two, Laca led in digs with two, and Ayers dished a team-high 10 assists in the win.

In Wednesday’s 25-15, 25-18 and 25-10 loss to the Mustangs, Oasis managed only five kills with freshman Reese Laca leading the team with two. Senior Madison Darst finished with two aces, Grace Laca had a block solo, and Laca, Ayers and junior Kailyn Guthrie each had a dig. Darst (three) and Ayers combined for four assists.

Oasis Academy (3-7) is competing in the 2A after spending the past four years in the 1A.

The top-six teams advance to the regional tournament with the top-two teams receiving a bye.

The 2A Northern regional tournament is Nov. 3-4 in Lovelock. State is the following week in Las Vegas.

The Bighorns sit in eighth but are within half a game from jumping into the top six for playoffs. The top six includes Yerington, North Tahoe, Pershing County, Incline, West Wendover and Sierra Lutheran.

Oasis Academy began a four-match stretch on the road this week, beginning with North Tahoe on Monday and Coral Academy on Wednesday. The Bighorns travel to Battle Mountain on Friday and West Wendover on Saturday before returning home on Oct. 11 to face Coral Academy.

The regular season ends on Oct. 26 at Yerington.


GIRLS GOLF

Oliva Kutansky sits in third in the 2A West girls golf standings with a stroke average of 93 and is only four strokes behind the leader.

In the Tahoe City tournament on Sept. 21, Kutansky finished the nine-hole course with a 50 after a pair of North Tahoe teammates tied for the lead at 46.

In last week’s tournament at Eagle Valley, Kutansky finished third again with a 100 over 18 holes. Teammate Meirra Cavanaugh, who sits in eighth with an average of 110, hasn’t competed since the first week of the season.

The regional tournament, which includes the 2A West and East divisions, is Oct. 11 at Eagle Valley and state is the following week at the Toiyabe Golf Club in New Washoe City.

The top three teams and top six golfers from non-qualifying teams will advance to state.


CROSS COUNTRY

In Saturday’s Truckee Cross Country Invitational at the Ponderosa Golf Course, sophomore Hunter Adams led the Bighorns with a time of 22 minutes, 25 seconds, followed by freshman Leonidas Arcoraci, who finished in 22:57. Sophomore Jay Frederick finished the race in 24:25 followed by sophomore Kayden White, 24:51; sophomore Chase Ackerman, 25:46; and freshman Kamron Bracken, 25:57.

The top time was North Tahoe’s Max Avril (18:41).

In the girls JV, sophomore Kayla Greenberg finished in 31:46.

The top time came from Pleasant Grove’s Addison Shaw (22:03).
