With spring break in full swing, the Greenwave baseball and softball teams stepped out of league play.

Both teams host Elko this weekend to resume 3A North play.

Softball braved the spring weather that saw snow cancel one of their games in last weekend’s Reed tournament. Fallon lost to James Logan (Union City, Calif.), 12-0, before defeating McQueen, 8-7, on Friday at Shadow Mountain in Sparks. Fallon fell to Spanish Springs, 6-3, but came back to defeat Galena, 2-1, on Saturday.

After being held to one hit in the 12-0 loss to the California school, Fallon came back in the final inning to defeat McQueen by a run.

Fallon led 3-0 after four innings but the Lancers scored seven in the fifth to take a four-run lead.

The Wave led off the final inning with two walks and a double to load the bases for junior Maddie Keller, whose walk scored senior Reece Hutchings. Freshman Sutton Yost’s single to right field scored freshman Layla Walker before freshman Kalaya Downs’ single tied the game when Keller crossed the plate. Junior Vernita Fillmore singled on the first pitch, scoring Yost to win the game.

McQueen didn’t record an out as seven Fallon players reached base.

Fillmore took the win in the circle, giving up six earned runs on seven hits.

In a 6-3 loss to Spanish Springs, the Cougars jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the fifth inning.

Hutchings led Fallon at the plate with two hits, and Fillmore, senior Kiley Wallace and Downs each had a hit. Junior Taralynn Vershum and Walker each had an RBI.

Fillmore pitched four innings, striking out three while allowing two earned runs. Rochelle Prentice, though, took the loss after giving up four runs in two innings.

The tournament finale was a pitcher’s duel between Fillmore and Galena’s Ava Greene.

After seeing the Grizzlies take a 1-0 lead in the first, Fallon took over with two runs in the fourth as both teams went scoreless over the final two innings.

Hutchings singled on the first pitch in the bottom of the fourth, setting the stage for Vershum. The junior catcher smacked the ball over the centerfield fence for a two-run homer.

Wallace and junior Dana Buckmaster also had hits for Fallon.

Fillmore went the distance, striking out four and giving up five hits and no earned runs.

BASEBALL

Facing another 5A school this season, Fallon’s baseball team couldn’t overcome an early 5-1 deficit to Spanish Springs on Tuesday in Sparks, falling 6-3.

Senior Carter Paul led the team with two hits, while junior Chase Carnahan and senior Isaac Martinez each singled and drove in a run. Junior Nathaniel Zackery doubled and had an RBI, while senior Baylor Sandberg also doubled.

Junior Anthony Juarez took the loss, pitching 2.2 innings and striking out one while giving up five runs with only one earned. Sandberg struck out three in two innings and junior Luis Lopez-Pinuelas struck out one in 1.1 innings.
