Greenwave roundup: Baseball, softball teams sweep Elko

The Greenwave baseball team kept pace with Spring Creek as the two teams will meet later this month to determine the 3A East title.

Fallon swept Elko to improve to 9-0. The Wave host Lowry this weekend before traveling to Spring Creek (9-0) next weekend to end the regular season.

The Greenwave defeated Elko, 16-10, on Friday to open the series before taking the doubleheader, 9-3 and 12-2, on Saturday at the Edward Arciniega Athletic Complex.

After spotting Elko a 3-0 lead in the first inning, Fallon responded with five unanswered runs before the Indians tied the game in the third. Fallon, though, scored five in the third to take the lead for good.

James Kelsey drove in four on two hits, including a first-inning two-run homer. Chase Carnahan walked and scored before an Elko error led to two more runs in the second inning. After Elko tied the game on a single in the third, the Greenwave responded when Carter Paul’s bases-loaded walk gave Fallon a 6-5 lead. Nathaniel Zackery singled in Trevor Hyde followed by Baylor Sandberg’s single to left to increase the lead to three. Kelsey’s two-run line-drive single to right gave Fallon a 10-5 lead.

Designated hitter Bryce Adams drove in two runs on four hits, including a double. Brady Alves and Paul each doubled, and Sandberg tripled.

Anthony Juarez pitched 6.1 innings, striking out five while giving up six earned runs for the win. Kelsey pitched the final .2 innings giving up three earned runs.

Saturday’s first game belonged to Sandberg as the senior collected three hits and struck out 15 Indians while giving up one earned run over 6.2 innings.

Sandberg tripled in two runs in the first inning to set the tone before Juarez drove in one on a groundout. Alves also drove in one.

In the finale, Alves doubled and singled twice to drive in a pair of runs, while Zackery, Adams and Kelsey each drove in one.

Adams pitched all six innings in the mercy-rule game, striking out seven while allowed no earned runs.


SOFTBALL

In a battle between two of the top teams in the 3A East, the Lady Wave softball team swept Elko. The Wave hosts Lowry (4-6), last year’s state runner-up, this weekend.

Fallon (7-2) won the series opener on Friday, 5-2, before sweeping Saturday’s doubleheader, 10-0 and 17-2, at the Edward Arciniega Athletic Complex.

In the first game, Fallon broke a 2-2 tie with three runs in the fifth inning as Janessa Bettencourt pitched a complete-game win, striking out six.

The Wave took advantage of a costly Elko error in the fifth after the Indians recorded a pair of outs. Vernita Fillmore singled to center with one out before Dana Buckmaster’s grounder forced out Fillmore at second. Kiley Wallace reached on an infield error before Reece Hutchings’ pop fly was misplayed in the outfield, scoring both Buckmaster and Wallace. Hutchings scored on a passed ball after Taralynn Vershum singled.

Bettencourt threw a shutout in Saturday’s first game, striking out six in five innings.

Vershum got the scoring started with a line-drive single that saw Wallace cross the plate in the first inning. Hutchings scored on a passed ball with L Walker in the box.

Maddie Keller’s single in the fourth scored Vershum, who led off with a double to left. Fillmore drove in Keller on a line drive to give Fallon a 4-0 lead. Two more runs scored in the fifth on an error before Vershum scored on a wild pitch followed by Walker scoring on Keller’s single. S Yost homered in the next at-bat to end the game.

Fallon scored nine times in the first inning of the final game before ending it in the fourth with four runs.

Fillmore picked up the win, giving up two earned runs while striking out four and allowing three hits.

Vershum and Buckmaster led the team with four RBIs. Vershum homered while Buckmaster recorded three hits. Wallace drove in three on one hit.


TRACK

The Greenwave track and field team competed in the Skyhawk Invitational in Las Vegas last weekend.

Fallon placed 11th out of 22 teams in the boys division and 13th out of 18 teams in the girls.

Fallon travels to Truckee this weekend before visiting Carson next week.

Top-10 results, and season and personal bests are listed below.


BOYS

Sprints: Senior Dayton Steffens (12.06 seconds), sophomore Wyatt Dixon (13.03) and freshman Garret Helton (13.36) each ran personal bests in the 100 meters. Junior Brody Hughes ran a season-best 27.49 in the 200 while sophomore Justin McArthur ran a personal-best 1:02.46 in the 400.


Distance: Junior Edwin Ugalde finished fourth in the 800 with a personal-best 2:05.39. Also recording personal-best times were freshmen William James Lofthouse (2:25.85), Leojro Chavez (2:27.60) and Jarret Ugalde Torres (2:28.01). Freshman Angel Mendez Barajas ran a personal-best 3:00.26 in the 800. Junior Uriel Romero-Montes ran a season-best 2:29.06. In the 1600, senior Edmond Allyn and Chavez each ran personal bests of 5:24.74 and 5:26.53. Allyn also had a personal-best 11:33.31 in the 3200. Freshmen Jackson Barbee (11:50.57) and Zander Lewis (14:53.64) also had personal-best times.


Hurdles: Freshman Jaeshon Pearson ran a personal-best 21.83 in the 100 hurdles, and freshman Avery DeAloia ran a personal-best 51.23 in the 300 hurdles.


Relays: The 4x100 team of seniors Dayton Steffens and Braden Hendrix, sophomore Bransyn Wright, and freshman Nathaniel Bianchi finished eighth in 46.99.


Throws: Senior Jacob Sorensen threw a personal-best 110 feet, 6 inches in the discus, while Helton had a personal-best 90-11.


Jumps: Wright won the high jump with personal-best 6-5 and took fourth in the triple jump with a personal-best 41-7. Bianchi (17-11.75) and freshman Rylan Clark (16-11.5) had personal-best marks in the long jump while senior Matthew Neumann posted his best season mark at 15-1.25. Bianchi (38-10.5), freshman Kenyon Wilson (35-2.75) and Neumann (33-7.5) had personal-best marks in the triple.


Pole vault: Allyn finished sixth in the pole vault with a personal-best 10-6.


GIRLS

Sprints: Senior Brienna McArthur ran a personal-best 14.17 in the 100, while freshman Taylor Perry (32.30) and junior Nadia Basurto (32.37) had personal-best times in the 200. Perry ran a 1:16.85 and freshman Anaya Barber ran a 1:27.57, both personal bests in the 400.


Distance: Freshman Tommie Fitzer ran a personal-best 3:06.94 in the 800.


Hurdles: Senior Sofia Basurto ran personal-best times of 18.37 and 52.45 to place 11th and 10th in the 100 and 300 hurdles. Fitzer ran a personal-best 57.08 in the 300.


Relays: The 4x100 team of seniors Jessalyn Lewis, McArthur and Basurto and freshman Karmen Alcanter finished seventh in 54.76. The 4x200 team of Barber, Basurto, Fitzer and freshman Lillian Souza finished eighth in 2:10.43.


Throws: Senior Madison Lewis finished ninth in the shot put with a throw of 27-2 followed by McArthur throwing 27-1.75 to take 10th. Sophomore Katelyn Glinka (25-8) and freshman Hannah Hanks (20-2.5) each threw a personal best.

Lewis had a personal-best throw of 68-7 in the discus as did freshman Allison Chiaratti at 39-2.


Jumps: Lewis finished sixth in the triple jump at 33-4. Junior Kaelyn Hudgens jumped a personal-best 11-1.75 in the long jump.
