Douglas girls hoops control Carson

The Douglas High School girls basketball team continued to show why its one of the best programs in Northern Nevada, putting together a 57-16 win over Carson High School Friday night.

The Tigers are 7-1 in Northern 4A league play following the win and remain one game behind Bishop Manogue (8-0) and one game ahead of Spanish Springs (6-2) in the standings.

Carson sits at 0-8 following the loss.

Douglas has won five straight against Carson and 8 of the last 11 meetings between the two programs. 

Setting the tone

An 8-0 run to open the contest up set the table.

Sky Rasmussen found Zora Simpson for a triple to start the rivalry matchup.

McKenzie Main followed with a triple of her own from the corner before hitting another bucket from beyond-the-arc to give Douglas an 11-3.

Talia Tretton used an offensive rebound to tally an assist a few possessions before drilling a 3-pointer of her own. Tretton also had a pair of steals in the opening quarter.

The Tigers’ ended the first quarter with a triple from Ashlyn Greenfield, who turned around and hit another off an assist from Hailee Koontz to start the second quarter.

Greenfield’s second triple gave Douglas 20-6 lead.

Giana Zinke, who ended Friday’s contest with eight points, was the next to knock down a shot from deep, prompting a Carson timeout.

“I think we’re pretty comfortable. Sometimes we start out slow, it’s more just an energy thing for us,” said Main.

Greenfield led the way in scoring for Douglas with 12 points while Main followed with 10.

The second half of the game featured what the Tiger girls basketball team has become known for over the last couple of season – a deep bench.

Hailee Koontz put together eight points for Douglas, Zora Simpson had five while Madison Frisby, Malia DeLeon and Annie Hill all added three apiece.

With a 29-10 lead at the halftime intermission, the Tigers outscored Carson 28-6 in the second half. 

Senator stats

Carson point guard Dahlia Keating has been one of the staples for the Senators as of late.

For the third game in a row, Keating has put together double-digit points totals on the scoreboard.

Friday night was no exception as the Senator junior, deposited 10 of Carson’s 16 points.

Alondra Carillo ended her night with four points for Carson.

“We knew it was going to be a long night, but we have to focus on us,” said Carson interim coach Nate Tolbert. “She’s (Keating) kind of a sleeper. She doesn’t say much, but she goes out and gets the job done. Dahlia is a very strong team player. She is very unselfish, sometimes too much. You would take a team of five Dahlia’s.”

Second half goals

Both teams are now halfway through their league slate and each have their own priorities moving forward.

Carson and coach Tolbert will continue to focus on themselves as the Senators look to rally for a league win in the second half.

Douglas wants a shot at the top of the standings.

“We’ve been told we’ve been given the golden goose having such a deep bench,” said Main.

“No matter who rotates in, we know it’s a fresh body we can count on and we can cheer for,” said Greenfield. “Keeping that chemistry and that flow.”

UP NEXT: Douglas (12-5, 7-1 in 4A North) will get back on the court Tuesday at McQueen (4-11, 2-5). Carson (5-12, 0-8), after an off-day Tuesday, will take on the Lancers Friday in Carson.
