There were multiple reasons for wrestling fans to be excited in Minden on Wednesday.

Not only was Douglas celebrating Senior Night, the dual also served as the first girls league dual in Northern Nevada, per head coach Jake Fair.

On the boys side, the Tigers fell to Spanish Springs (68-9) and McQueen (59-21) while the girls split their duals, beating the Cougars (30-24) before falling to the Lancers (36-24).

Senior Sage Adie continued his impressive season on the mat with another 2-0 day.

Adie battled with his opponent from Spanish Springs going up 2-1 in the second period on a takedown.

However, the period ended at 2-2. Adie started the third on the mat and escaped for a 3-2 lead, which he was able to hold through the final buzzer.

“I was 1-4 against him,” said Adie. “On my Senior Night it just meant a lot to go out there and give it my best to beat him.”

Adie’s match against McQueen ended in 2:36 with a win by fall.

Vincent Cereghino was the only other wrestler to pick up a win against Spanish Springs, pinning his opponent in 3:44 for six team points.

Cereghino fell behind 8-2 in the first period, but two near takedowns eventually set him up for a pin late in the second period.

Junior Kolton Zinn needed less than a minute to pin his foe from McQueen, placing his opponent on his back in 45 seconds.

The Tigers’ last two wins against McQueen came from Travis Haliwell and Aaron Tekansik.

Haliwell took an early lead with a takedown and three nearfall points before winning by fall in 3:53.

Tekansik battled to an 11-6 decision, trailing momentarily in the first period behind an early takedown.

“I got a little bit sad for a couple seconds and then I remembered I have a lot more wrestling to go,” said Adie, who plans to wrestle in college. “I’ve had a pretty good showing wrestling at home the last couple of years.”

On the girls side, Bliss Moody spent a total of 41 seconds on the mat, pinning her opponent from McQueen after getting a win from an “open” slot against Spanish Springs.

Moody, who is graduating a year early, was also part of the Senior Night celebration.

“Everything is finally coming together with wrestling. It’s finally making sense to me,” said Moody. “Overall, my high school wrestling career has gone really well even if it’s only three years.”

Moody has been a part of a wrestling scene that is growing in Northern Nevada and continuing to see the sport make strides has been special to her.

“We had a lot of freshmen come in and a lot of new girls start and it means a lot to me. It’s finally showing how everything is coming together for girls wrestling and how everything is advancing,” said Moody. “I’m really proud of these girls for overcoming the fears they had at the beginning of this season and I’m just happy they’re here supporting me and I’m supporting them.”

Ella Kavanagh put together a perfect evening with two wins by pin.

Her first came against Spanish Springs where she needed 2:22 to earn six team points. Her second match lasted 3:25 before she put her opponent on her back.

Elizabeth Alloway secured a pin in 2:19 against McQueen as well.

Reno outlasts Tiger boys

Douglas boys basketball went up against a tough Reno team Tuesday night, falling 77-73.

The Tigers dug themselves a bit of a hole early, falling behind by 10 after a quarter, but were able to knot the game up twice in the second half.

Tied 61-61 with 2:53 to go after a Jeremiah Pitts triple from the corner, the Huskies were able to limit Douglas to two points over the final three minutes of play.

Defense continues to be a priority for Douglas coach Corey Thacker and the rest of the staff.

“It’s the mental focus for 32 minutes. We were up and down with that,” said Thacker. “There’s times where we are doing the right things, but Reno is a good team. We have good pieces, we will just keep working.”

Douglas (6-15, 5-6) took on Bishop Manogue (7-13, 5-6) Thursday in Reno.
