Obituary: John Byers

A celebration of life for John Henry Byers will be at 2 p.m. today at the Carson Valley United Methodist Church.

Mr. Byers died July 4, 2003. He was born April 8, 1948 to Henry F. and Florence Dolf Byers in Gardnerville.

He was a 1966 graduate of Douglas County High School and attended the University of Nevada prior to enlisting in the U. S. Army in 1967. He was an honor graduate of the Redstone Missile Arsenal in 1968, and served in the Army until 1970.

He then worked for NCR Computer Refurbishing Center and RCA Service Co. in New Mexico while attending New Mexico State University, where he graduated with honors in 1976. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society.

Mr. Byers returned to Nevada in 1976, and worked for Harveys Resort Hotel Casino from 1976 until 2002, most recently as network specialist in the Corporate Information System Department. He was beginning a career with Bally Gaming Systems at the time of his death.

He loved flying, learning to fly when his father had a plane in the 1960s. He was a past member of the Carson City Aero Squadron. He was a passionate and devoted member of the Douglas County Sheriff's Search and Rescue organization for the past three years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Sandra Pinard.

Among his survivors are his wife Teri; daughter, Stacey Byers of Carson City, stepsons Cory Hinsz of Southern California and Brandon Hinsz; and brother, Kent Byers of Gardnerville.
